My name is Jazz, and I am a Black female musician living in Philadelphia. I'm looking for support to help me pay rent and establish a stable housing situation for the first time in three years.
Over the past three years, I have been repeatedly displaced. Each time, I have had to rush into a temporary housing situation with no lease agreement. This leaves me vulnerable to being displaced again.
In July, I moved into a sublet that was advertised to last until March 2021. It seemed like I had finally found a stable situation. I was a good housemate. I followed the strict rules of the house, and generally kept to myself. As I got to know my housemate, a white cis female, I ignored some serious red flags, including micro-aggressive remarks, and a generally judgmental attitude towards my lifestyle.
At the end of September, my housemate suddenly gave me a month’s notice to move out. She gave no clear reason. She said “I don’t know if it’s you or if it’s your partner, but I’m just not happy.” I was left confused, hurt, and scrambling. This is the second time during the pandemic that I have been displaced. Luckily, I was able to find another temporary housing situation. However, this new apartment is far out of my price range, and it will only last until the end of March.
I am hoping to raise funds so that, by the end of March, I will have enough money to find a place of my own, and finally sign a lease so I can finally achieve housing security. As a person with chronic respiratory issues, I have to be extremely cautious during the pandemic when seeking work. These funds will also serve to hold me over while I seek remote employment.
