EMPOWERING THE YOUTH ON SUSTAINABILITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS

"It is important to see the younger generation taking charge of the future. It is important to train them on how to take charge and change the way we are operating, by giving them more power to act” Former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Climate change is just like an undetected cancerous cell in a “healthy” body. Understanding the realities of climate change is the best thing that can ever happen to an individual. Living in a community that is vulnerable to the impacts of reoccurring climate stimuli (variability, extremes and changes) made me change my approach in handling climate change. This made me understand that something needs to be done, especially on passing on the knowledge and science about climate change obtained during my my career, numerous courses, training(Climate Reality Leader) and workshops.

If education is the most powerful weapon which can be use to change the world, , then climate change education is the most powerful weapon which can be use to save our planet.

Through our nonprofit organization, and with the help of other climate leaders and educators, i developed an interactive curriculum base on age group, on sustainability, environmental and climate change education, with objective to empower the youth in schools and communities vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, especially on what is happening, why it is happening and what they need to do on their part to prevent it from happening.

Workshops and training on environmentally friendly income generating activities is included in the program, to support the target population to earn a living while engaging in the fight against climate change. In this way, they will be benefiting from their actions while securing their future(a win-win process).

The budget plan for this project is $98000/year (The detailed budget plan and concept note for this project is available to donors and sponsors on demand). With the completion of the first part of the project(curriculum development), the next part is to prepare a favorable environment and condition(office space, facilitators, project team, consultants, training materials, field trip, workshops) for a proper implementation of the project in the various institutions selected across  Cameroon. Thanks to your generous gesture, this can/will be achieve.

The climate emergency is a race we are losing, but it is a race we can win. The climate crisis is caused by us and the solutions must come from us.”
“If we don’t take action in addressing the climate crisis, the world will be face with a global genocide. “ UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

Developing countries face the greatest impacts of climate change as they are often heavily dependent on climate-sensitive economic sectors, such as rain-fed agricultural activities or low-yielding smallholder agriculture. Thus, these countries are highly vulnerable to climatic variability and extreme weather events such as droughts and floods.

Furthermore, the lack of economic diversification, infrastructure and communication makes developing countries' economy and livelihoods of their citizens particularly vulnerable to natural shocks and least able to adapt to changes in inter alia temperature, water resources, agriculture production, human health and biodiversity.<IPCC, 2018>

We are living in an interconnected world where the impacts of climate change are limitless, irrespective of national or international boundaries, though the  same impact in a particular region may be different/irrelevant in another.

Despite the progress made by Organizations, countries, and scientific institutions on climate change education, training, and international cooperation, there is  still a significant gap between the potential to support and accelerate effective societal responses to climate change challenges and opportunities and domestic and international programs, especially those that strengthen international cooperation to scale up education efforts that are already underway, as described by Article 6 of the UNFCCC.

"You're failing us, but the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say, we will never forgive you." Greta Thunberg

Youths in developing countries especially those in Cameroon still minimize the effect of climate change and the global call for actions to a better future (Sustainable Development Goals). This can be due to the fact that a majority of them are living in poverty (less than $1 a day in some communities) and hardship, causing them to think first of their immediate needs rather than that of their future.

As climate change is concerned, the actions of well-off adults in developed nations will indirectly and disproportionately harm young people, future generations, the poor, and populations in developing nations that are not the highest emitters.

WHY CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION

Several fundamental aspects of climate change make clear both the need for education and the opportunity it offer.

First, addressing climate change will require action at all level of society, including individuals, organizations, businesses, local, state, and national governments, and international bodies. It cannot be addressed by a few individuals with privileged access to information, but rather requires transfer of knowledge, both intellectually and effectively, to decision-makers and their constituents at all level.

Second, education is needed because, in the case of climate change, learning from experience is learning too late. The delay between decisions that cause climate change and their full societal impact can range from decades to millennia. As a result, learning from education, rather than experience, is necessary to avoid those impacts.

The world is in a situation where actions are needed to limit the emission of greenhouse gases (especially Carbon-dioxide), in order to guarantee the survival of the future generation.

The best and most effective way to save the future generation is through a vigorous climate change education. As we all know, learning from experience is learning too late. We need to incorporate climate change education in all sectors of life, like is the case with the sustainable development goals.

SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM

The program is developed into an interactive age group curriculum with more discussion, practical work, workshop, training, field trip to natural sites and final assessment for students wishing to obtain a certificate at the end. The program is divided into 4:Human right, Environment, Sustainability and climate change

This program will run every year. For this year, it will be carried out in schools in the littoral region of Cameroon. Facilitators and volunteers will be trained on how to use the curriculum to empower students in their respective placement institutions.

ORGANIZERS

Environmental Education for a Better Earth Cameroon (EEFABE) is a youth led nonprofit organization created in 2017 with headquarters in the littoral region of Cameroon. It have as mission, to protect and preserve the earth and its resources through Sustainability, environmental and climate change education, and to provide environmentally friendly income generating activities to youth. Its members are environmental scientists, climate change educators and entrepreneurs.

For you to know where you are heading too, you need to know where you are.

When you empower the youth at school going age, they grow up to implement what they have in them in their society and nation as a whole. With your help, the youth in this part of the world will yield to the call for action to practice sustainable use of resources and the fight against climate change through best practice, and by holding their government accountable. This is the time for you to take action in the fight against climate change.
