Clean The Block: Logan Ave Beautification

Donation protected
Historic Logan Avenue is not being properly maintained and the residents of Barrio Logan are tired of hearing excuses - we need our streets to be cleaned.

As a community, we can no longer wait for someone to come deep clean our sidewalks or beautify our neighborhood. We need to get creative and solve this issue on our own.

We consider our neighborhood of Barrio Logan to be historic and sacred land. It is the home of Chicano Park - a world renowned national landmark that serves as powerful reminder of community strength and perseverance. We expect for our neighborhood to be properly cared for and maintained.

But it is clear that Barrio Logan is not being appreciated. Our roads and sidewalks are not being cleaned or maintained and our overall health is being negatively impacted by pollution from the shipyards.

So, if the powers that be will not step in, then it is OUR responsibility to CLEAN THE BLOCK

In Barrio Logan, we believe that "Love will win and Fear will lose".

We believe that if we are able to work together, as one, then we can truly prosper as a community.

We can be sustained, internally, by our own community members, neighbors and small business owners.

Many Logan Ave business owners and vendors have already began donating a small portion of their "Walk The Block" earnings to a new community initiative called "Clean The Block".

Clean The Block is a community initiative with two very simple goals:

1. Keep Logan Avenue clean and maintained throughout the year.

2. Create beatification projects that directly benefit the Barrio Logan community.

Within the first few weeks of launching Clean The Block, we have been able to hire a local maintenance crew that will be sweeping our streets from Chicano Park to 26th street, re-painting all light poles, weed whacking, and picking up all excess trash.

But in order to keep this community project sustainable throughout the year, these are the steps that need to be taken:

1. We need to raise $7,600 to keep Logan Avenue fully cleaned and maintained for one year. The services provided to us will be as follows:

- Initial deep cleaning of Logan Ave from Chicano Park Herb Garden to 26th Street (sweeping streets, trimming trees, weed whacking, re-painting all light poles, removing graffiti and picking up all excess trash)

(Total Cost of Initial Deep Cleaning of Logan Avenue: $800)

- Monthly maintenance along Logan Ave: Litter Removal, Sidewalk maintenance, sweeping, retouching over graffiti, landscaping and additional trash removals.

(Total Cost of Maintaining Logan Avenue: $400/month or $4800/year

- Power washing along Logan Ave from Chicano Park Herb Garden to 26th Street

(Total Cost of power washing Logan Avenue: $2000)

2. We need to raise an additional $2,400 for Logan Ave beautification. Our goal is to launch a series of public art installations along Logan Avenue. We want these art projects to be created for the community by the community. We have many phenomenal artists located within Barrio Logan and we would like to give them all an equal chance to shine.

- Public Art Project #1: Trash can murals in collaboration with Hector Villegas, a community artist and activist and owner of Gallery 1904. We plan to have seven different local artists paint murals on all of the seven trash cans located along Logan Ave.

- Each trash bin will cost $150: ($50 for paint/supplies & $100 for artist's time/labor). We plan to paint all 7 trash cans along Logan Avenue.

Total Cost of Trash Can Mural project: $1050

- Public Art Project #2: TBD (Accepting community requests!)

- The remaining balance of $1350 will be used to fund our next Public Art Project and it will also be used to assist with any additional maintenance requests that arise throughout the year.

In conclusion, for the very reasonable cost of $10,000 we can not only keep historic Logan Ave clean and maintained for an entire year, but we can also create beautification projects that directly benefit the residents of Barrio Logan.

Our community is strong and we can get through any crisis - but we must work together; there is no other option. We are problem solvers, we are creative, we are hustlers.

We can no longer wait for someone to come save us, we must save ourselves.

So, if you care about Barrio Logan and you feel like it's being unjustly underserved and underfunded, then please consider donating to our cause. No donation is too small and every last cent will be go toward the beautification of Barrio Logan and Logan Avenue.

We can only accomplish this goal if we work together. Thank you for your love and support <3
