Canterbury Homeless Outreach

Canterbury Homeless Outreach is a society run by University of Kent students, whose mission is to help the homeless in our local area by offering food, having a conversation and acknowledging those who are sleeping rough on the streets. We started as a small group of students who would feed the homeless with our own sandwiches three times a week. Now we have a contract with Greggs who donate their unsold food every evening. These evening events are called ‘Outreaches’ which take place throughout the academic year.
By creating a GoFundMe page we aim to carry out and support the invaluable work of the Canterbury Outreach volunteers, whilst raising funds for our three local homeless charities. These local charities are, Catching Lives, Porchlight and Canterbury Housing Advice Centre (links below). 60% of the money raised will be spread evenly between our three local charities and the remaining money collected will be used to help the Canterbury Homeless Outreach fund future activities, prizes and any other fundraising events. Should there be any money left over at the end of this year, we will distribute evenly between our three chosen charities.
Homelessness is a devastating issue and with the fallout from COVID-19, it adds another layer of misery to an already dreadful situation. That is why with your support and donations we will be able to increase our profile and encourage new individuals like yourself to join our journey. There are many complex reasons as to why people may become homeless, including for example a breakdown in a relationship, losing ones job, and health problems (both mental and physical). Imagine all of these issues within a stable environment, then imagine the same issues sleeping rough on the streets. Being homeless can, in turn, make many of these issues even harder to resolve. Therefore, every penny donated is a step closer to ending this deeply saddening unacceptable issue, and that is why we need to raise awareness together and change peoples perceptions for the better.
