CLOSED: Install a memorial bench for Ewan MacColl

Donation protected
Ewan MacColl (1915-1989) was a giant of folk music: inspirational singer, actor, activist and writer of hundreds of songs including beloved classics Dirty Old Town, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, Shoals Of Herring, The Manchester Rambler and more.

Today his name is on a plaque at a memorial oak tree in Russell Square, London, near many of the folk clubs he ran in the 1960s and 70s. Friends and family gather at the tree on 25 January and 22 October, the dates of his birth and death, to sing his songs and honour his memory.

We want to install a bench beside the tree and are raising money, with the blessing of his widow Peggy Seeger and his estate, to make that happen.
