Vital COVID help for India's marginalised families

Donation protected

Can you provide vital support to India’s most excluded and vulnerable people during the Coronavirus lockdown?

The situation

India’s Dalit and Adivasi (tribal) communities comprise millions of the population and many of these people are daily wage earners, already living hand-to-mouth. Millions of people in precarious employment have already lost their jobs due to the government-imposed lockdown, and there are no relief packages of any kind for these daily paid workers. Many families now have literally no means of purchasing or accessing food. The stigma of being a ‘Dalit’, a so-called ‘Untouchable’, is making it even harder for Dalit and tribal communities to access the most basic and essential items, such as food and healthcare. The reality for these communities is that they live in slums, in very close proximity to others; social distancing is a luxury that isn’t available to them.

This is why your support is critical.

What you can do

You can help by giving money if you’re able to do so; a little money goes a long way in India, and the total cost to buy essential food and safety items for 50 families is just £830.

If you can’t donate money, you can share this fundraiser, or ask your family and friends to donate. You can also help by liking or commenting on any links to this page, as this will help to boost visibility.

What we are doing

We are sending money to help provide basic necessities to families left without income or access to supplies; this means buying staple foods and hygiene products so that families can survive and stay protected against disease. Bharat Wankhade, founder of Mudita School serving underprivileged children in Amravati, Maharashtra, has already been personally providing food and supplies to families in his area, and we aim to support him in doing so.

More information on Bharat's Mudita School can be found here: http://www.muditaschool.org

Keeping you informed and how we will use your gift

Bharat will be keeping us updated with news and photos of the families he is supporting. Whatever money we receive here will then be sent directly to Bharat, and will all be spent on actual goods for these families. Any money will help directly; if we don’t manage to meet the target, all the money will still go to helping families. If we are lucky enough to exceed the target, any extra money will be used to help more families, and there are always more families in need of help. Anything you can give will help someone hugely!
