Help Ruth-Ann Live Beyond Cancer

Donation protected
Thank you for considering supporting my strong, beautiful, unrelentingly positive friend Ruth-Ann in her effort to live beyond the cancer she has been living with for almost 3 years.

Ruth-Ann has always been an incredibly fit and active person, and she was the picture of good health until the fall of 2017, when she noted blood in her urine. In February 2018, her kidney was partially removed, and the cancer type shown to be papillary renal cell carcinoma, a very aggressive form of kidney cancer. This cancer was metastatic at the time of diagnosis, with all 3 of her tested lymph nodes positive. At that time no treatment was available.

In December 2018 the blood in her urine returned, and in February 2019 her kidney was completely removed. At that point, a treatment called dual immunotherapy was available, and she received this from March – December 2019. Unfortunately, her lymph nodes continued to grow, so the immunotherapy was stopped. After a short treatment break which allowed her to perform an orchestra flute solo, she started a new medication called sunitinib in March 2020.

In July 2020, the cancer spread to her brain, requiring neurosurgery followed by brain radiation. It then spread to the tissue surrounding her heart, causing repeated fluid collections requiring drainage. Ruth-Ann has now started axitinib, which is the last publicly-funded treatment available to her in Canada, and her oncologist has no further treatments to offer her beyond this.

Ruth-Ann served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a family physician at the military base in Trenton until her illness forced her to give up her practice in early 2018, and she was medically released from the military in April 2020. In the summer of 2018 her family moved to Comox, BC, where her husband Jeff continues to serve as a military SARTech. Now, Ruth-Ann and  her two beloved sons aged 6 and 10 explore the seashore and forests near their home, and she helps them foster their own love of music.

Ruth-Ann is determined to live beyond cancer, and she is currently exploring a program that repurposes older drugs for cancer treatment and genetic mutation testing to help target treatment. She is also doing everything she can to maintain a positive emotional and spiritual outlook. In Ruth-Ann’s words, “I believe in the healing power of the mind. I believe in nature, and love, and life, and that we are all a part of a big beautiful thing. None of us knows when we will die. I have come to terms with the possibility of dying ‘early’. But I want to live long and see my children grow up and live beautiful lives.”

Thank you for considering donating to give Ruth-Ann her greatest chance of becoming cancer free. Funds raised will go directly towards treatment costs for the next few months, and if necessary, travel and childcare costs.  Thank you for supporting Ruth-Ann and her family.
