Earthquake Damages for Kontaiika Village, Samos

On the morning of October 30th an earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, rocked the eastern Mediterranean. Barely 5 miles from the epicenter, my family's home village of Kontaiika on the island of Samos, Greece, sustained extensive damage. Most older public structures were reduced to rubble and many inhabited homes and buildings have also been destroyed, while numerous others have been deemed danger zones until damages can be assessed and repaired. Residents are sleeping on tents outside (despite dropping temperatures) and in their cars until they can safely enter their homes again. Our beloved church, a beacon of faith for the community for over 120 years, now has a gaping hole in its exterior and extensive interior damages. My family has been blessed to call Kontaiika our native home for over 5 generations. As such, I am hoping this fundraiser will ease the inhabitants’ troubles in whatever way possible. We are praying for an end to this nightmare, but aftershocks have been ongoing and scientists say that bigger ones will be following in the upcoming days. Our only desire is to see our village in all its glory and, even more importantly, its residents living in safety once again. Allocations will initially go to first-relief efforts for the residents (food, shelter, etc.) and will then be put towards public structures such as repairing the church and school. (This fundraiser is run by Elpida Maragoudakis of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Στις 30 Οκτωβρίου ενας σεισμος των 7,0 Ριχτερ χτυπισε το ομορφο νησί μας, την Σάμο. Ηταν ενας πανίσχυρος σεισμός πού τράνταξε την ανατολική Μεσόγειο, και περιπου 7χμ απο το επίκεντρο του σεισμού ηταν το νησί μας το οποίο έπαθε μεγάλες καταστροφές. Στο χωριό μας, τα Κονταιϊκα, αρκετα σπίτια και κτίρια έχουν καταστραφεί εντελως, ενω άλλα έχουν θεωρηθεί επικίνδυνα μεχρι να γινουν εκτιμήσεις για το αν είναι επισκευάσημα. Μεχρι τοτε, οι κάτοικοι κοιμούνται εξω σε σκηνές και σε αυτοκίνητα. Ακόμα και η αγαπημένη εκκλησία μας, ένας φάρος πίστης και ελπίδας για την κοινότητα για πάνω απο 120 χρόνια, έχει τώρα ενα τεράστιο ανοιγμα στον εξωτερικό της τοίχο και αμέτρητες ζημιές στον εσωτερικό χώρο. Ολοι μας τώρα πια προσευχόμαστε για ένα τέλος σε αυτόν τον εφιάλτη, αλλά οι μετασεισμικές δονήσεις συνεχίζονται και οι σεισμολογοι λένε ότι θα ακολουθήσουν και στις επόμενες μέρες. Η οικογένεια μου ενιωθε πάντα υπερηφάνεια να αποκαλεί το χωριό Κονταιϊκα το σπιτι μας για τις τελευταίες 5 γενιές, και ελπίζω αυτός ο έρανος να ειναι μια μικρη βοηθεια των προβλημάτων και των αναγκων που θα προκύψουν. (Αυτός ο έρανος γίνεται με πρωτοβουλία της Ελπίδας Μαραγουδάκη από τη Φιλαδέλφεια, Πενσυλβανίας, ΗΠΑ. Όλα τα χρήματα που θά συγκεντρωθούν θα παραδοθούν απευθείας στό τοπικό συμβούλιο της διοίκησης του χωριού Κονταιϊκα για να καλύψουν έξοδα αποκατάστασης ζημιών και αναγκών.)
