Help Robert Mallin Ride Again

Donation protected
Robert Mallin was an avid cyclist. From 300+ mile charity rides, to weekend excursions, Robert could often be found on a bicycle traversing the roads he loved including commuting around NYC. His partner, Melissa, and one-year-old son, Sidney, loved cheering him on and were beginning to enjoy biking together as a family.

On October 3rd, 2020, Robert's riding career came to a screeching halt.

Looking for a new bicycle to enhance his commutes around New York City, Robert decided to test out a bike from a brand with the best reviews. Melissa waited at the showroom, making final preparations for Sidney's first birthday, which was to be celebrated the next day, and within minutes of his departure, Robert's defective test bike malfunctioned; he lost control and was thrown from the bike.

Robert was hospitalized with a fractured skull, a traumatic brain injury including bleeding in the brain, placed on a ventilator, and into a medically induced coma. He spent a month in the ICU and has recently been moved to a rehab center where he continues ongoing care under close medical supervision.

Melissa and Robert have limited independent health insurance. Their policy is not sufficient to cover the mounting medical costs, which as of today, total over $400,000, and growing.

Unfortunately, 2020 has been hard on Robert, as COVID shutdown the NYC restaurant industry, he lost his job as the Director of Operations for non-profit social enterprise restaurant group. He quickly found work, through a friend who was able to employ him in his factory. Melissa is a small business owner, who continues to work from the hospital daily, while overseeing Robert's medical treatments.

Robert isn’t out of the woods yet. Because of the nature of the incident, the road to recovery will be a marathon, not a sprint. He will be in rehab for the next several months, and unable to work in the foreseeable future. Melissa is currently adjusting their life together for Robert’s ongoing medical care, and his eventual return home.

With that in mind, please consider contributing what you can to this GoFund Me account, which will go towards paying for Robert’s mounting medical bills. Any financial contribution will help pave the way forward to their new normal, as Robert and his family continue to heal. No donation is too small – every contribution counts.

Let’s help get Robert home!
