In the Fall of 2016, a handful of Phoenix-area Hungarian families felt that their children would benefit from regular exposure to Hungarian-language programs, so they started bi-weekly language classes for preschool- and school-aged children. From these humble beginnings grew the Napocska Hungarian School of Phoenix, commonly known as NAPOCSKA .
Building on the great success of the school activities another need was recognized. Members of the community felt that there is a need for meaningful and great quality cultural events. That is how our cultural association came to be.
In the Spring of 2017, the Hungarian Cultural Association of Phoenix was established, commonly known as HCAP. It serves Hungarians and non-Hungarians in the area with the purpose to help them get to know the culture better and preserve it for future generations.
HCAP became a 501(c)3 tax exempt corporation in the summer of 2018.
NAPOCSKA is now operated by HCAP.
Since 2016 Napocska and HCAP have grown significantly and organized numerous cultural and educational events such as:
-Hungarian Festival AZ
-Harvest Festivity (Szüreti Bál)
-Christmas Fair (Karácsonyi Vásár)
-Community Tuesdays
and many more.
*As the HCAP and Napocska does not own real estate, all activities are held in rented space by the board of directors and our teachers, who are all volunteers.
**The success of these events are grounded not solely in our volunteers work, but the performers that HCAP invites. These performances cost thousands of dollars per year. In general one performance costs between $400 - 1000
***Funds are also spent on material goods as well as different platforms used for communication and events e.g. Zoom, website, marketing materials, food for events, utensils, etc.
****HCAP and Napocska does apply for grants and usually receives funds that support the activities of the school and ONE event/year.
We would like to continue our excellent cultural and educational initiative for many more years to come, with the aim of providing our families with the opportunity to nurture a healthy identity as Hungarian-Americans, American-Hungarians.
It is for this that we are relying on your generosity.
