Are pet owners being left out in the cold when it comes to knowing enough about the raw foods they choose for their pets?
Lacking industry regulation, Canadian pet foods are not required to include a statement of nutritional adequacy on their packaging. Statements such as “nutritionally complete and balanced for all life stages” or “intended for supplemental or intermittent feeding only” help buyers differentiate a balanced food from a nutritionally incomplete one. Often, there is little or no information offered from the Canadian manufacturers as to what is really in the frozen patties or grinds, and some companies make unsubstantiated claims about the nutrients and quality of their products. Consumers may also draw their own incorrect inferences about these foods.
This grassroots effort, funded with the help of pet parents everywhere, will provide all raw-feeders with a better understanding of commercial raw products in general while providing Canadian raw-feeders an independent analysis for a number of Canadian commercial options, enabling them to make better purchasing decisions.
I'm Dr. Karen Becker, a proactive, integrative veterinarian who focuses on creating pet wellness and promoting longevity. I know the value of feeding thoughtfully designed fresh-food diets to our pets, and I am very concerned about the labeling of raw pet foods. Long-term feeding of nutritionally incomplete foods can cause harm to the pets we love!
Most fresh-feeding pet owners are making this effort to benefit their best friend’s health and it can be heartbreaking to discover the health consequences of a deficient diet. This is happening across Canada, and I believe providing veterinarians and pet owners with detailed analysis, obtained through independent testing, will allow everyone to make more well-informed decisions. We deserve to know that the commercial pet foods we choose are nutritionally complete, or, we need to know what to add to make them balanced.
That’s why I started this project -- I want to pull together to provide nutrient testing on popular Canadian raw pet foods. Results will be compared to global standards, including ancestral estimates and presented objectively, with no recommendations, criticisms, reviews, or opinions. The ultimate goal of this project is to create a free, public database for raw-feeders, nutrition-junkies, and vets to use as a resource. Testing is expensive, and funding isn’t often available for raw initiatives. This is where you come in!
