Laura Dasi Breaking Free of Breast Cancer

Donation protected
Summary:
I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer on Oct. 30, 2020. As a very healthy individual never would I have ever though I would go through something as life altering as this. Yet I was told by my Dr. “Cancer doesn’t discriminate…it can strike anybody anywhere at any time”. As I face this challenge ahead I will be undergoing surgery and other procedures on the road toward healing. I am asking for donations to cover lost income and any uninsured medical expenses. Through all of this I am extremely grateful for the love and support of my partner, family, friends and community as well as modern medicine and my excellent care team.

My Story:
Oct. 30, 2020 is a day I will never forget…..Having found a lump in my left breast back in Aug. I followed the necessary steps to have it checked out. I called my Dr., who scheduled me for a mammogram and ultrasound. Those diagnostic tests revealed that there was a suspicious looking mass that needed further evaluation so on Oct. 22 I underwent a biopsy. While I was waiting for the results I kept reassuring myself that it was “nothing”, that the lump would turn out to be a benign cyst, which is quite common, and that it wouldn’t need any further intervention. But on Oct. 25th while I was in the shower, still bruised and sore from the procedure, a little voice in the back of my head asked “What if it’s not a cyst?” “What if it’s something else?” I couldn’t even bring myself to say the word cancer in my own mind.

I was told that I should be receiving a phone call with my biopsy results by Tues. Oct. 27. That day came and went with no word as did the following day. Finally on Thur. Oct. 29 I received a call fully expecting to hear “The lump is a benign cyst, no need to worry or have it removed”. Instead what I heard was “We’ve made an appointment with the oncologist for you tomorrow”. Oncologist? That word immediately raised a red flag along with fear and trepidation. The following day on Oct. 30 my beloved partner Derek and I made our way to the Dr.’s office. Not knowing if he would be allowed into the exam room with me to receive the results because of current COVID restrictions we were relieved that we could be together when we got the news. As we were waiting for the Dr. to enter the exam room questions and uncertainty swirled in both our minds. I was still telling myself “It’s nothing” because after all denial is one of the stages of grief.

After what seemed like forever the Dr. Finally came in. With a somber look on her face she sat down and before she even spoke both of us knew the news would be good. Immediately as she uttered the words “The lump is cancerous” Derek and I both broke down in tears. The Dr. gave us some time to be together and sob as we held each other before we spoke to my case manager who outlined the next steps.

I have a long road ahead of me filled with phone calls, appointments, tests and procedures. During this time I will be missing work as I undergo and recover from surgery and any other treatments my team of Dr.s deems necessary for my healing. This is where your help comes in. I am asking for donations to cover my lost income as well as any uninsured medical costs that may accumulate. I realize that this year has presented unprecedented challenges for all of us. Any amount you are able to contribute truly does help along with your loving thoughts, prayers, meditations and words of encouragement.

The silver lining in all of this is that the cancer was caught early and is treatable at this time. I have an excellent team of Dr.s on my side who are very prompt and proactive in getting me seen and treated. I have an incredible partner at my side who is a shoulder to cry on and provides strength to lift me up, always loving and supporting me, and always willing to conquer whatever challenges life throws at us. I am surrounded by amazing friends, family and community including YOU and for that I feel eternally blessed. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for whatever you are able to contribute financially, emotionally and spiritually.
