Raising The Awareness of Post-Polio Syndrome to Every GP Practice Around the World
We need to raise £6,000, being the cost of developing a 'Five Minutes to Change Your Practice' module to raise the awareness of Post-Polio Syndrome to all doctors in the UK - We have just received an award of £1,000 from the Shanly Foundation to support this project, so we are now looking for £5,000.
There are over 150,000 Polio Survivors in the UK, and more than 20 million around the world, the vast majority living with one of the most debilitating neurodegenerative condition in the world today, Post-Polio Syndrome, with very little, or no, access to appropriate medical or welfare support , and so are suffering extreme fatigue, intense pain, disabilities, respiratory and throat/swallow issues, and in some cases paralysis, and we need your help to ensure that we all have access in the later years of our lives.
PPS is a totally debilitating condition that develops some 30 or more years after the initial polio virus attack, and is not inevitable. With careful long term planning with the support of experienced medical professionals, the symptoms can be relieved and controlled, so please give us your support today, and the module can be made available to every GP throughout the UK. Following success here in the UK, we will use this module as a catalyst to continue our work raising the awareness of Post-Polio syndrome around the world, thus enabling every polio survivor to have safe and easy access to medical, welfare, and social support in their home country.
Meaningful learning which provides deep understanding of a topic is difficult to achieve in modern general practice. While we used to be able to utilise the lunch or coffee break or a rare CPD session for some uninterrupted learning, the current reality of time between patients is more likely one of getting to grips with hundreds of unanswered emails, urgent referrals, checking of results and DES and NIS audits. So a major challenge for general practitioners remains to find time to stay up to date when their temporal resources are severely limited. For those weeks when you’re not able to sit down and do a full RCGP e-learning module on its own, the Online Learning Environment Team has devised a 5 minute, bite sized presentation that will take a current topic – often debated in the popular press and therefore familiar to patients – and give you just one or two ideas how to change your practice and improve patient outcomes.
