Bonnie is our 12 week old Sprocker Spaniel. She has very quickly became a part of the family, becoming best friends with our 8 year old dog, Fudge.  Unfortunately, 2 days ago Bonnie became very unwell. She was constantly tired, trying to sleep and just didn't seem her usual happy and playful self. We took her to the vets, who carried out blood tests but nothing abnormal showed on these tests. They sent Bonnie home with a different diet to try and some antibiotics for a suspected gut infection. Later that evening Bonnies condition deteriorated dramatically. She seemed to be in a daze, didn't know who she was, she was walking around in circles and was trying to find small dark spaces in the house to curl up into.  We immediately contacted the vet who asked us to bring Bonnie back in. It was at this stage we found that Bonnie was in a critical condition. Further blood test were taken and it was found she had high ammonia in her blood and they suspected she has a porto systemic shunt. A porto systemic shunt is an extremely rare liver condition where the blood vessel should go through the liver to clean the blood. Unfortunately in Bonnie's case, the vessel bypasses the liver, meaning all of the toxins go into her body causing her to be seriously ill and impact her neurologically. Our vet had only seen this condition one other time in her career. Bonnie was kept in over night on an antibiotic drip and fluids whilst the vet tried to contact specialists. We were told on this evening that it was a critical period for Bonnie and we were to be on call in case her condition worsened. The next day Bonnie was transferred to a specialist vet, where an ultrasound and CT scan were carried out which confirmed Bonnie has a Porto systemic shunt. Bonnie has been stabilised over night with medication and has been allowed to return home with a strict diet and medication. Unfortunately, Bonnie will require complicated surgery to fix the shunt and save her life.  If Bonnie does not have this operation, she will die however if this operation is carried out there is a 95% chance Bonnie can live a full, normal and happy life. Bonnie requires this operation as soon as possible as whilst she is home on medication, if she catches any other problems, she will not be able to fight them and will die as her immune system is compromised. Due to the complexity of the operation the costs are very high, and we have been told can go as high as £9000. Our insurance company will not provide us with any cover as Bonnie started showing symptoms within the first 14 days of us taking out her policy.  If we were in a position to pay for this surgery ourselves we would, however we are unable to come up with this money in such a short period of time. I ask if you could please spare anything that you can, and share this page with everyone you can to help save Bonnies life. We would be heart broken to lose Bonnie due to financial restrictions when we have been told she can live a full and happy life after this operation. Thank you so much to everybody that has donated, we cannot convey how thankful we are!
