Education Fund - Young people in direct provision
Donation protected
Nasc's Connect Migrant Youth Project works with young asylum seekers and people of ethnic minority backgrounds in the care of the State or in aftercare. Connect provides a range of supports from education to wellbeing.
The majority of the young people in our Connect project do not qualify for grants or free fees to attend further education. A post leaving certificate course can cost up to €4,000 while international fees for universities can be over €12,000. Even those who are granted scholarships and have course fees waived struggle with the costs of travel and books.
The Connect projects advocates directly with colleges to try to secure lower fees, assists young people with scholarship applications and provides mentoring throughout their course. This means that our money can go further and support more people. Last year, donations raised by Nasc helped 35 young people to access education. 4 of the young people in our project were awarded scholarships. 15 young people were provided with learning supports i.e. transport costs, books, learning materials, IT and remote learning equipment. 5 of the young people in our project were awarded distinctions from the courses in the 2019/2020 academic year.
We also work with young people to provide intensive English language classes. 13 young people were supported with basic English and academic English lessons to support retention in school and college.
This year we want to ensure that we can support more young people as well as providing the supports that those already in our project need to go on to 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of their courses.
Your help can give 30-40 young people the chance at an education. All funds raised go directly towards supports for young people in education:
Thank you.
