Summary: This is for an Antiracist Technology Design Challenge, prize money for the winning student teams, with these competition rules.
Rationale and Examples: Technology has been defined as anything that extends human capability. Antiracist technology is designed to extend the capabilities of individuals and groups who seek to end racism.
Once racism, and methods to reduce racism, are understood, engineers can work with antiracists using a “participatory design method” to innovate in this space. Innovation needs include:
(1) Approaches to remove “algorithmic bias” in computer vision and machine learning, and to create without such bias
(2) Technology supporting community organization and action
(3) Website design to reduce racial profiling
(4) Technology supporting transparency to reduce government corruption
(5) Technology to help in the fight against human trafficking.
Funding raising is for an engineering-wide “Tech4SocialJustice Challenge,” in Autumn 2020 called the Antiracist Technology Design Challenge. All funds to go to cash prizes for the student winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize).
Supporting Courses: In the Dept. Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ohio State University College of Engineering, there are two courses: “Antiracist Technology,” a “Freshman Seminar” (Autumn 2020), and an undergraduate-graduate version that will be open to all engineering students for Autumn 2021.
