Last year, I was accepted into the Biomedical Sciences Masters Program at Rosalind Franklin University. Through this program, I would earn a Master's Degree, certification in Healthcare Administration, and a high chance of acceptance to Rosalind Franklin's medical school.
In the winter quarter of last year, I had to take a leave of absence due to my own health failing, as well as my father's. He was given a month to live unless he made drastic changes to his life, as well as undergoing a surgery to fit him with an artificial heart. Thankfully, he is since doing much better and recovering, and may even qualify for the transplant list soon. This is, however, one of several reasons my family is unable to help me financially in this matter.
During this time, I had no income, as I had anticipated living off of my student loan. Thus, I was unable to pay back the money I owed to the school for no longer attending that quarter. I have been slowly paying them back as I have been able, but I still owe more than I will be able to repay in time in order to re-attend starting this year. I need to have my bill paid in order to register for classes before August.
If I do not re-attend this year, in the best case scenario, I will be allowed to return in 2021. However, extending my leave of absence for this reason is highly unlikely.
Medical school is costly, and this is how many marginalized folks are kept from attending. I am a queer person of color, and I desperately want to practice medicine in such a way that those who cannot trust medicine, who have not seen themselves represented in medicine, will finally have someone they can go to. Please help me achieve that; I will be eternally grateful.
