Please help SAVE HILLCREST! and stop the destruction of our historic and unique community!
Hillcrest is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means that it is on an official list created by the federal government which recognizes districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects worthy of preservation. Hillcrest's period of signficance is from 1890-1940. This is the time period in which most of Hillcrest was developed and what still stands today.
Hillcrest acts as a small village in the middle of Little Rock, AR. We have our own commercial center, schools, post office, banks, parks, restaurants and historic homes. It is representative and still functions in much of the way that it was originally built and designed to do. The buildings are human scale with tree-lined streets. Most amenities are within walking distance; even our children are able to walk to neighborhood schools.
Right now our village is in danger of losing its architectural and historic integrity because unthoughtful developers and those who want to enjoy these amenities but do not understand or appreciate the importance of history in this community and are tearing it down to build bigger and newer homes. This endangers our listing on the National Register because we are losing structures contributing to its historic status.
Save Hillcrest! Is not trying to stop the neighborhood from evolving but hoping it will do so in a way that is sensitive to its historic architecture and streetscapes. Historic preservation is not about stopping creative and exciting architecture and development but about retaining the best of a shared heritage while still preserving sites of unique quality.
A group of neighbors have gotten together forming Save Hillcrest!, an organization whose mission is to stop the demolitions and keep Hillcrest's integrity and status as a National Historic District. Save Hillcrest! is in the early stages of development. We are currently working with city officials, Preserve Arkansas, the Quapaw Quarter Association, and the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program to learn how to stop the destruction of our community.
We are trying to raise money to help stop unneccessary demolitions! Any funds recieved will be used to educate the community about the advantages of being in a historic district, the dangers of demolishing our community and actively fight to protect against its destruction. Depending on funding and support, Save Hillcrest! may pursue protections for the neighborhood one sectional boundary at a time.
Your donation will help purchase promotional materials and rent venues for neighborhood meetings.
