Help Dani Get Back on Her Feet!

Donation protected
My name is Nicki and I can't remember a time when my mom wasn't there for me. From the moment I took my first breath, she was there holding me. She helped me to walk, to talk (which she probably regretted a few times down the road), and to stand up for myself and for others. Whenever I needed help, whether it was with friends or bullies, schoolwork or bills, she was there for me. Advice was given freely, as was money if I ever truly needed it. She never hesitated to sacrifice her own time or funds to help her children.

(Dancing together in fitter - and younger! - times)

The only exception is if I fell and scraped my knee, she usually told me to stop being such a baby and get up again. This is because in addition to being an amazing mother, she has also worked in the emergency/trauma department at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa for over fifteen years. I can only imagine the number of people she has helped save over the years, and the number of tragedies she's seen firsthand. What was already hard became even harder when the Covid crisis began. You have to be strong to work in the ER and even stronger to do it for years. She's one of the strongest people I know.

Two weeks ago, days before she was supposed to help my grandmother recover from an elbow injury, my mom suffered a rollerblading accident resulting in a total avulsion of her hamstring. This is when the hamstring muscle totally detaches from the pelvis. It is a very uncommon injury, as well as a serious and extremely painful one. She was hospitalized for four days and had surgery done by a specialist one week ago. The surgery involved drilling holes into her pelvis to attach anchors to which the hamstring could be reattached to.

The recovery time on this type of injury is very long. She is immobilized and essentially bedridden for the first six weeks, followed by five months of intense physical therapy. There is no guarantee she will ever recover full function of her leg.

(My mom, rockin' the Transformer look - and the pain - like a champ!)

Although she always works full-time, her status at her job is technically part-time so she will only be receiving disability coverage at the level of her status, which results in her only being paid for 8 hours a week. She normally works 36-60 hours/week.

With two mortgages and mounting medical bills, it will be impossible to make ends meet. I know many people are hurting during the Covid crisis, but if you have anything to give, please consider helping a hardworking Mom and frontline healthcare worker. All funds will go towards medical bills and supplies, and mortgage payments. Feel free to contact with any questions!

(A thank you to those who made masks for healthcare heroes - but now also thanks to you!)
