Hadrian's wall walk-David Pollock memorial

Donation protected
Hadrian's wall:84 miles, Bowness to Wallsend, a journey that will take us at least 4 days to complete. Currently planned to take place in August, but it may have to change if current circumstances don't change.
We hope that by doing the walk we can get people to sponsor us to complete it and help us to raise as much money as possible to go towards a new service at James Cook University Hospital linked to the Teesside CF Centre.
Why are we doing this? Well, firstly for those who don't know the 'Legend' in the photo, his name is David Pollock. A well loved member of his family and a great friend to many. On the 23rd September 2019 David unexpectedly lost his battle with cystic fibrosis something he was diagnosed with as a baby. This had a massive impact on all who knew him and so together a few of his family members and friends have decided to do something in his memory, something we know he would of been happy to support if he was still here today.
Cystic fibrosis is a life long, life limiting genetic condition. People with CF experience a build up of thick sticky mucus in the lungs, digestive system and other organs causing a wide range of challenging symptoms affecting the entire body. Daily treatment is necessary to keep them in a state of good health for longer and CF is different from one person to another. Treatment sometimes requires the patient to travel to hospitals outside of their home towns.
This happened to David and many others in the Teesside area, when from the age of approx 17 their care was transferred to initially Leeds and then to the RVI Newcastle as these were considered the best equipped to treat the older age group of CF patients. Not an ideal predicament for the patients as it would mean long journeys when they weren't feeling at their best, as well as the 'normal' challenges the teenage age group have to face at this time of their lives.
Currently at James Cook patients up to the age of 18 are admitted to the children's unit for care before being transferred. What we are hoping to do with the funds we raise is to help support an exciting new service that is driven by the paediatric team to ensure the needs of local young adults with CF are met by the children's team working alongside the adult team. This would mean that care can carry on in an environment and with people the patient is already familiar with closer to home, hopefully taking away a bit of the stress these young people are under, and in the future encourage and aid hospitals in other areas to follow suit and offer a similar service.
In order to get things started they need to prove that there is a demand for the service and that there is support out there too, hopefully with your help whether it's a donation or sharing the information about what we are doing we can be the start of something special. It would be our way of as the photo says making sure that David 'will live forever '.
