Black Lives Matter mural Hudson, NY

Help us fund our Black Lives Matter (BLM) mural efforts in Hudson, NY (and hopefully Catskill)
and support policy change in both communities.

Thank you so much for considering a donation and sharing our campaign!

THE BACKSTORY

Black organizers from Hudson/Catskill Housing Coalition (HCHC), artists, and allies seek to publicly declare that Black Lives Matter. We proposed two BLM Murals in Hudson and Catskill to echo those being painted on neighborhood streets and major thoroughfares across the nation.

Mayor Kamal Johnson of Hudson committed immediately to the mural. The Catskill Village Board of Trustees rejected our proposal and declared that no public messages would be posted.

WHY THIS IS NEEDED

The murals are an example of symbolic support, but we are demanding tangible changes in policies and practices that govern our cities, disproportionately affecting Black residents. These demands are in response to grossly inflated police budgets as compared to funding for community programs that truly keep our neighborhoods safe. A mural is but a gesture toward commitment to racial and economic justice.

The fact that Catskill has rejected our proposal speaks volumes about the necessary work to dismantle white supremacy in our rural counties. Negative responses have exposed the systemic racism in our Twin Counties. Extreme gentrification has transformed our region, eliminating access to affordable housing for long time residents, many of whom have lived in these communities for generations and feel unwelcome on their own main streets.

THE COSTS

We have spent $5,000 on paint, provisions, poster printing, outreach, and administration. We will host a socially distant, celebratory unveiling of our Hudson mural with a budget of $1500. (These costs would ideally be duplicated as we win our campaign for a twin mural in Catskill.)
