Support this book and protect our climate!

According to the UN tourism can help to restart the Global Economy in a more sustainable way after the Covid-19 crisis. This is a hopeful message for a new opportunity for us and our planet.
The money from this fundraising will be used to be able to publish my book: Tourism vs Climate Change.
The purpose of this book is to promote sustainable tourism, to improve a multi-cultural society and to help slowing down climate change.

Do you want to know how we can improve tourism in a way that it benefits society and our planet?
Feel free to make a small donation and be the first to receive a digital copy of Tourism vs Climate Change, how tourism can improve society and slow down Climate Change!

It all started in November 2019 from a conversation I had with a traveler in Ecuador. I asked her if she would also travel to the Galapagos Islands. She told me that she would like to, but that she didn’t want to fly to the Galapagos. To her it was a contradiction to fly to a nature reserve more than 900 km away, while the Green House Gas (GHG) emission from her flight might cause the sea level to rise and these islands to disappear.
I had heard this reasoning before and it is a valid point.
However when I explained to her what the negative effects would be if tourists would stop visiting the Galapagos Islands, it made her thinking. She had never really considered how important the positive effects of tourism could be, even if this includes flying.

This conversation made me think. I’ve been working in tourism for more than 16 years now and have seen and experienced both the good and bad effects of tourism first hand.
For people who don’t travel much these effects are often not very clear and currently it is very popular in the media to focus more on the bad effects of traveling and tourism. We often hear and read about the negative effects of GHG emissions from flying and words like ‘Flighshame’ are gaining in popularity. However this isn’t fair. Traveling, tourism and even flying also come with many advantages for our society and indirectly our environment.

When I started writing my book Tourism versus Climate Change in November 2019 the goal was to present both the disadvantages and advantages of tourism. This way people can make a more balanced decision about where and how to spend their vacation.
However, after months of research (over 300 studies and articles), writing and re-writing, I learned that traveling and tourism are even more important than I thought.
I learned that traveling has actually helped our society to become more united than ever. I also discovered that sustainable tourism is still possible and that when used in the right way, tourism might even be able to help slowing down climate change!

Now I have the story of my book ready and am I anxious to share my information with as many people as possible. But the Covid-19 pandemic has complicated my financial situation. I usually sell tours in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, but for the past months this was impossible. It isn’t even clear yet when international tourism will reactivate again.

But on June 10 Antonio Guterres from the UN said: "Sustainable tourism can promote solidarity and trust - crucial ingredients in advancing the global co-operation that is so urgently needed at this time. It is also a great tool to spread money more equally within an economy”.
Of course, at the moment it is best not to travel into other countries if there is no need for this. But when the Covid-19 pandemic eases, we should take that opportunity and use tourism to restart our economy in a more sustainable way!

No, I’m not naïve to think that my book Tourism vs Climate Change will save our planet. But I do hope that the information from this book can help to give ideas, spread hope and motivate people to make tourism more sustainable.
For this reason I've also started a new Facebook group called Tourism versus Climate Change  in which I’d like to invite all of you to share ideas about how we can improve tourism.

Ideally I would like to print a few copies of my book for old fashioned people like myself who still like to hold a book. But the majority of the books will be sold as Ebooks, which is better for the environment.

The past few months I had a lot of time to do research and write. I now have a complete story and a cover for my book. But I need help to pay for editing the text in English, as this isn’t my native language. I also like to ask for financial support to be able to publish my book, to pay for advertisement and to sustain my own life-support a little longer until I can start selling tours again.

Each donation of 5 USD or more will bring me a step closer to being able to publish Tourism versus Climate Change. Each person who makes a donation will also receive the opportunity to get his/ her name printed in the first edition of my book.
But for each donation of 20 USD/ 18 Euro, or higher I will send you a digital copy of my book!
If all works out I hope to be able to publish by the end of September.

For those who want to support my book through Paypal, you can donate through: Martijn Steijn, [email redacted]

On behalf of myself, the tourist sector and our beautiful planet I can’t thank you enough in advance for any small contribution you can spare in these tough times!

Kind Regards and Love,
Martijn Steijn

This is the cover of the first book I wrote in 2007. It's a Dutch paperback with many stories about 4 years of traveling, volunteering and working as a tour leader in Latin America.
I wrote this book to encourage other people to dare to set the first step of traveling with a backpack and discover the world around us. The publisher doesn't exist anymore, but I still have the file with the text. Maybe if I sell enough copies of my new book, I will also have this book converted into an e-book...
