REPORT TO STOP RAPE

Donation protected
Ibrahim Sorie Bangura is a Sierra Leonean poet, musician, designer and community activist. He is also a devoted husband and a new father. He wants what every parent wants: to make sure his beloved baby daughter grows up in a community safe and free from the threat of rape, sexual assault, and gender-based violence that is currently prevalent across Sierra Leone.

He was born and brought up in a subsistence farming village in the Northern province of Lungi where he spoke several languages: Themne, Susu, Krio and English. He was nineteen when he migrated to the capital city Freetown to escape rural poverty. After surviving on the streets for several years he joined an arts education charity where he learned creative writing, music production and design. He is now a poet whose work has been published internationally. You can read some of his poems here.

He wants to use his creative talents to educate communities on the issues surrounding rape and gender-based violence and spread the message of the support services which are now available in Sierra Leone for survivors of rape and sexual assault. Instead of reporting directly to the police, survivors or their families can now call a dedicated, confidential, emergency helpline to access a wide range of support including medical services, psycho-social counselling and legal advice as well as liaison with the police.

REPORT TO STOP RAPE (‘Repot Fo Tap Rape’ in Krio) is a grass-roots, community-action campaign which he devised and set up with his fellow members at Future Leaders Initiative FLI), a registered, non-profit youth organisation which was founded in 2018 with the aim of empowering disadvantaged rural youth, women and children.

The aim of the campaign is to encourage survivors to report rape rather than keeping silent and living with the terrible personal, psychological and health consequences - such as post-traumatic shock syndrome, sexually-transmitted disease, unwanted pregnancy, shame and stigmatisation.

Reporting rape and sexual assault not only gets immediate help and on-going support for survivors, it also helps the police get justice for them and protects others in the community by stopping the perpetrators from offending again.

Currently in Sierra Leone rape is dealt with mainly as a family issue: it is often unreported, hushed-up, for fear of shame and stigmatisation. In some cases young girls are even forced to marry their rapists.

Ibrahim and his team really need your help to promote and spread the ‘Report to Stop Rape’ message and the 116 help-line telephone number across the country, especially in rural village communities where many people have limited access to the usual channels of communication. There are three main elements to the campaign.

1: BANNERS

He has designed  sixteen banners which can be displayed in prominent places (such as markets) in the sixteen districts of Sierra Leone. The banner is written in Krio, the language spoken by 90 percent of Sierra Leoneans, and has clear illustrations for those who can speak but are unable to read Krio.

2: JINGLES

Ibrahim has also written a ‘jingle’ - a short, easy to remember, public information announcement - to be translated into the nine regional languages (including Krio and English) which can be broadcast on several radio stations.

3: SHORT SKITS

He has developed nine short skits (dramas), each in a different language, which act out scenes encouraging families to report rape or sexual assault. These skits will be filmed and shown on TV and in community settings.

HOW YOUR DONATION CAN HELP?

Your donations will enable Ibrahim to get 16 large, heavy duty, weather proof banners printed and pay the transport costs so that he and his FLI colleagues can distribute them to each of the sixteen districts in Sierra Leone.

The money will also pay for the jingles to be recorded and broadcast on radio and the skits to be filmed and broadcast on TV and shown in community settings in rural villages.
