Create Not Hate

In 2007, Trevor Robinson OBE set up an initiative called Create Not Hate. Looking back at his own experiences growing up in South London, he wanted to help talented, inner city kids from similar backgrounds to his own. The vision was to make them aware of the potential avenues that exist within the creative industries. Through outreaching to schools in the community Trevor grew up in, we got a number of young people involved in the project, supported by mentoring from advertising industry professionals and in-agency working sessions. A brief was set and the best creative idea was chosen to be made into a film. Others who had entered their ideas were involved in every aspect of the project from recording voice overs to shooting the final film. 

Written by two 14 year old boys who had recently experienced their friend being murdered, ‘A Mother’s Tear’ was the first short film to come out of the Create Not Hate process. Apart from the online conversations, news headlines, free national cinema exposure and nearly £2m in earned media, the real success was the empowering effect on the hundreds of kids across London who became involved in the programme – for them, doors were opened into a world they might never otherwise have seen …and to the creative potential their life could have.

In light of recent global events, we believe 2020 is the right time to reignite Create Not Hate. Back in 2007, fewer people were championing the importance of diversity and inclusion in the creative industries, Trevor Robinson being in the minority. Create Not Hate was very successful, but didn’t generate the scale or sustainability it deserved. This year people are finally taking a long overdue stand, and we want to contribute to the much-needed change that is happening. Hopefully this time around, with more support, Create Not Hate will sustain the momentum it deserves. 


Our first CNH project in 2020 is launching a brief to young people through outreach partners across London to come up with creative ideas for a multi-channel, anti-racist campaign, utilising the platform of Notting Hill Carnival. The best creative ideas will be made into a real campaign by Create Not Hate and anyone else who entered their ideas that wants to be involved, can be involved in some part of the project. The Young people will be supported along the way by mentors from senior positions in advertising and peer to peer mentoring from young industry juniors.
