Support Swing Dance Uganda through Covid-19

Donation protected
This campaign is spearheaded by Atite Prisca and  Okurut George aimed to support the members of Swing Dance Uganda.

Our dance teachers, youth, and children students, who have lost contracts, income and possibilities to attend classes, due to the COVID -19 pandemic  with financial support for basic necessities to survive, as there is no help provided by our government in regards to Artists Relief

Our community

The Swing Dance Classes encourage the children and youths to socially, physically, and mentally be engaged now that they are out of school and at home. Because of the regulations and the high transportation fare, and with parents who have lost jobs and income, most people cannot make it for classes.

Teachers are using alternative methods, such as sending dance challenges through WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media platforms, to spread joy and connection to local communities, but our members are urgently in need of financial support for basic necessities to survive, such as groceries, electricity, etc

Our organization

Swing Dance Uganda (SDU) is a movement formed in 2019 by the Duo after their return trip from Mozambique. The vision of SDU is to promote the visibility and access of dance as a social entity to communities in Uganda.

SDU focuses on dances like Lindy Hop, African American Vernacular Jazz and Charleston, which are all African American dance forms originating in the swing era 1920s -1940s Harlem, New York, and recognises the connection between African American swing dances and traditional and modern Ugandan dance disciplines. For example, the positioning towards the ground, improvisation to transpire creativity, circular and line formations, the polyrhythmic music which relates to the percussion of the Ugandan instruments and customarily the importance to community engagement.

Collaborations In uganda
SDU has partners with Dance Adventure Studios to host international teachers and also run zoom classes for youths
SDU also partners with Heart of Dance to host community workshops for the children and motivate their careers in dance

As a newly formed organization, we believe that our immediate task is to reach out to supporters and help raise funds for our members hit heavily by the pandemic.

Where does the money go
