Help Build a Bridge in Bolivia!

Help make a difference in a Bolivian community by donating to Engineers in Action UofT!

This Summer, the UofT team along with UCL, Iowa University & Virginia Tech will be working together to build a 80 m footbridge to serve the community of Villa Florida, located in Bolivia!

Who We Are

Engineers in Action University of Toronto Chapter (EIA-UofT) is a multidisciplinary team of university students working together to enact positive change in our world both internationally and in our school community.  After a year of designing and planning, a team of students from our chapter travels to an isolated community in a developing country every year to construct a footbridge. These footbridges bridge the poverty gap in communities by improving their access to:

         - Health care,
         - Education,
         - Agricultural Lands,
         - Business Opportunities and Markets.

In the past five years, the UofT chapter has constructed five bridges (four in Bolivia and one in Guatemala), and has helped improve the lives of over 3000 local residents.

Research shows that footbridges result in a 6-to-1 return on investment in the first year after the bridge is built. That is why we think our work is very important and helpful to the local community.  But don’t take our word for it. Watch this video taken from our Bridge Program to understand how what your contribution means to us and local residents!

What We Do

Our team of 30 undergraduate students uses technical knowledge from the classroom by facilitating the design and construction of footbridges in less developed countries.  In addition to building the bridge, we also engage with the community to learn more about their way of life. Back at home, our chapter uses our experience to host workshops for other engineering students at U of T to develop their engineering and global development skills.

How You Can Help

Building bridges is expensive… who knew?  We need your help to pay for some of the costs associated with our work.  For this year’s project we are going to incur costs in the following areas:

         - Project Fees, which include costs for:
                   - Materials and Delivery
                   - Tools
                   - Masons
                   - Surveys
         - Transportation to and from site

We would greatly appreciate any contribution to our meaningful project that can improve the livelihoods of hundreds of people in Villa Florida!  We know from experience how much these projects mean to the communities and that’s why it would be great if you could help us get a little closer to building a bridge in Bolivia this year!
