Housing developer Avant Homes have made an appeal to the Secretary of State asking that the democratic decision made by Sheffield City Council Planning Committee in June 2020 to refuse planning permission, be overturned. The money we raise will provide funding for a planning consultant and lawyer to help us fight to save the fields at the Planning Inquiry in January 2021.
So, we’re asking for your help to save and preserve Owlthorpe Fields. They are an important habitat for protected birds, animals, plants and flowers. Wildlife is disappearing at an unabated rate and this small parcel of land in South East Sheffield, home to so much wildlife, may soon be lost if Avant Homes win their appeal. We are in the middle of a Climate and Biological emergency; we are being told to plant trees, yet hundreds of trees will be lost if development of the fields goes ahead.
This uniquely rewilded site is an important green oasis in the middle of urban sprawl. More houses will bring ever more vehicles into an already congested and polluted area.
Instead of housing, we are proposing the Site becomes part of an ‘S20 Nature Corridor’ linking Owlthorpe Fields in the West with Westfield Plantation, Waterthorpe Park and the newly created Holbrook Washlands in the East. The corridor would not only be used to protect and enhance the biodiversity of the fields, but it is hoped by engaging with local schools, pupil attainment can be improved. We also envisage that the physical and mental health of local people can be improved by encouraging them to exercise and engage with the natural environment of the fields.
Finally, by keeping the existing tree cover, the area will not see increased CO2 emissions as the hundreds of self-set trees act as a carbon sink and filter out dangerous particulates. Trees have a myriad of functions, providing shelter and food for wildlife as well as mitigating flood risk.
