Beirut

I am a British Lebanese engineer, living in Beirut with my family. I'm 47 years old and have been living in Lebanon since 2000.

Recently, we have had our money stolen by the government, salary slashed due to hyper inflation caused by a financial crash – brought on by years of corruption – and now our home has been blown to bits in a massive explosion, also caused by negligence and incompetence.

We can't afford food, let alone new windows or a roof. Many others are suffering much more than us, friends and children have lost their lives, and now as the dust is still settling, it is us, the people, risking COVID 19, sweeping the broken glass and twisted metal of our homes from the streets.

The day after the explosion, there was a huge demonstration by the people and the army just shot rubber bullets and tear gas at us.

Get out of there right? That would be the sensible thing to do. Well that's just the thing. We have British/French passports, we could just leave all this mess behind us. We were considering that before the blast, but now seeing my home for 25 years flattened to the ground has made me want to stand up for myself and everybody else, against the handful of thieves who wrecked Beirut in 30 years and 1 second.

If anybody out there is moved by this real life horror story, please help me and I vow to make it my duty to make sure that the needy receive help directly to their pocket, at the time they need it – right now!  Another thing I would do is fight these thieves who have destroyed the hopes and futures of 5,000,000 people.

I would set up an NGO if support was large enough, to perpetuate the system and ensure legitimate book keeping. I have well qualified friends in Lebanon and across the world who would jump at the opportunity to do something positive for their country at this time.

My house was 650m away from the blast site. The building is still standing but may be condemned after structural tests. This is the area most affected by the blast, as it is just out of the 500m total destruction zone – this is where  people were seriously injured, rather than killed, and therefore where we would begin our efforts.

I have never asked anyone for financial help in my life and feel awkward about it. I can't do this without a lot of help though.  Will you help?
