EFAM recovers, transforms, and distributes food surplus and natural medicines to unhoused, formerly incarcerated and low income communities to further the regeneration of people and land.
We steward the process of detox, recovery and growth with Ancestral Medicines.
Our global network offers handmade wares that support the work of EFAM and the communities they come from.
Vision
A re-indigized world where all people have access to land health and wellness
The world went into shock March 2020 as Covid and the resulting lockdowns impacted the globe. When everyone in the Bay Area was instructed to ‘stay at home” and “wash your hands” Xochitl and I asked ourselves what about the folks unable to shelter in or without access to clean water and soap? That question sparked Essential Food and Medicine: EFAM recovers, transforms, and distributes food surplus and natural medicines to unhoused, formerly incarcerated and low income communities to further the regeneration of people and land.
We steward the process of detox, recovery and growth with Ancestral Medicines.
After over a year and a half building relationships with residents, recovering and transforming food and natural medicines, organizing What's Your Medicine? healing clinics and performances at the Wood St. encampment, and helping to raise $80K to help build Cob on Wood, community support structures in one of the largest housing encampments on the west coast with ABC: Artist Building Communities, and Living Earth Structures, hosting our Sacred Activism Online/Offline speaker series, we have learned a lot and have some powerful and exciting next steps for the work.
In addition to continuing our main mutual aid food recovery work, we can make compost, turning juice pulp and food scraps into soil with a bio gas digester.
We learned that in addition to eviction defense, we need to partner with and develop nutrition and recovery programs to address root issues for the unhoused and reentry population. This includes building a community of healing practitioners and holders of ancestral medicine for detox and recovery.
We need a van and want to build out a mobile clinic inside.
We are creating a Global marketplace. Our global network will offer handmade products that support the work of EFAM and the communities they come from.
We want to continue paying stipends to residents for participating in our food and medicine recovery and transformation efforts, maintaining and building out programs at Cob on Wood, and bolster our operational capacity.
