Help Us Get Back Home

In June 2019, I acquired my late grandmother's home in the historic Orange Mound neighborhood. In October, I started the process of renovating the home because it had foundational, environmental and structural damage. In order for me and my family to continue living in the neighborhood I grew up in, I made the choice to take out a loan for renovations in order to save the house. Unfortunately, I was taken advantage of and swindled out of thousands of dollars by a family member who was working as my contractor. Although I have taken the issue to court, there is no guarantee I will recover the lost money. In the meantime, my house sits empty without the necessary insulation, sub-flooring, sheetrock, plumbing, walls, HVAC, and other infrastructural items that would allow my family and I to return.
Everyone knows I never ask for help. However, having money stolen from me was a major setback. At this point I need the support of my community to return home. This house is not just for me, but it's for my children, and my grandson who is on the way. Saving this home means that there is one more house in Orange Mound that will improve the quality and equity of the neighborhood. Being displaced has been very difficult, but with your help I hope to turn this situation into a blessing for all. Thank you for anything you can give.
