My Dear Queen Meet The Illustrator

Donation protected
The creators of My Dear Queen would like to thank our global community for supporting our last community book drive and helping us surpass our goal!  Due to everyone's efforts, we're excited to keep the momentum going raising funds to donate more books and introduce everyone to the gifted artist and illustrator, Yetunde Sapp , who brought the words of My Dear Queen to life.

Yetunde Sapp has been accepted to The New School's Parsons School of Design , one of the world's leading art and design schools based in New York, where she joins the ranks of talent like Smithsonian Award Winner Evan Roth and Award Winning Illustrator Louisa Bertman, both alumni of the private design institution.

In order to continue her education, Yetunde Sapp needs $3,000 assistance with covering her tuition costs, art supplies, education materials and rent.  Throughout the summer, Yetunde used her gift of artistic expression for activism, creating murals in the heart of Washington D.C. of those slain in acts of police brutality, visually inspiring communities to fight for justice and equality.  Yetunde's murals and dedication to using her artistic gifts for activism was also commissioned by the family of Frederick Douglass and organized protest efforts throughout the east coast of the United States who sought her work.

Funds from this campaign, will also be allocated to produce 250 printed versions of the book My Dear Queen.  When we hit our goal, copies will be delivered to schools, shelters, community organizations and institutions throughout the city of Los Angeles & New York whose programs benefit young girls and women of color, and Yetunde Sapp will be able to continue mastering her gift of visual and fine art.

It cost $3.95 to produce one book, with your minimum donation of $5.00 or more we can help Yetunde with her school costs and put the message of My Dear Queen in the hands of a young girl or woman of color that encouragesher to celebrate and love her hair.

Please take a moment today to read the poem My Dear Queen (listed below), share this gofundme link, make a donation and purchase a paperback copy or ebook on Amazon ; pricing for both versions on Amazon are discounted for the duration of this campaign and visit Yetunde's website and work.

We thank you for supporting My Dear Queen, our book drives and our illustrator, your help is valuable during these critical times when education and positive messaging is needed most for communities of color, and we look forward to spreading the words of My Dear Queen through this grassroots campaign with you!

My Dear Queen is written by Lawrence Carroll  (tv personality from “What Happens at The Abbey” on E! and “9 Months with Courteney Cox” on Facebook Watch), illustrated by the gifted artist and muralist Yetunde Sapp  , and creative directed by producer, author and conversationalist Joy Donnell   of CIME (Center for Intersectional Media and Entertainment: Advancing Representation).

My Dear Queen,

Your hair is a crown, unlike any other
A crown bestowed to you by your father and your mother
Your hair is like magic, it can change everyday
Your hair is a crown, worn so many different ways

You can wear your crown curly
Or wear your crown straight
You can wear your crown low
Or wear it in braids

You can wear your crown dreaded
Or wear your crown in a fro
Your crown turns heads, everywhere that you go

Your crown is not less than, nor inferior to others
You’re a Queen with beautiful hair, just like your mother

So wear your crown proudly, atop your beautiful head
Your hair is a symbol of royalty, no matter what anyone says
