Social Emotional Learning Forum (SELF)

Donation protected
Dear friends,

In April 2020, Africa Unite has launched a virtual Social Emotional Learning Forum (SELF) via Zoom. Every week we meet with high school learners (age 15-18) from all over the country to check in on their well-being as well as engage in important conversations around self-growth, self-care and practicing kindness towards others.

During these sessions, participants learn simple coping strategies they can apply during stressful times. They also learn how to structure their day, set attainable goals and shift their mindset from "I can't" to "I can".  We always encourage learners to express their emotions creatively through poetry, journaling and art. What SELF participants have to say:

Nthandokazi, 16 years: This group has not been just a group to me but a platform that made me fall in love with myself more. It made me realise that I’m more important than I ever thought I was. And that my emotions matter. Even if my week is not going well I know Wednesday things will change. I also learnt to motivate myself.

Bradley, 17 years: I realized that I’m not alone in the situations I face and that there is a network of people who face the same troubles as me and with their experiences I learnt how to deal with the curves life throws us…I’ve learnt the reason why people act the way they do and that each and every person has a struggle whether it’s internal or external and for that we also have to be kind. The intro questions about my week normally make me feel warmth because I get the opportunity to listen to others and to express or share my weekly adventures.

Ntsikatyethu, 16 years: I love Africa Unite; the team has been a good support structure. You guys have become our big sisters and brothers that give us good advice. I have actually become more positive about what is happening around me. I try to see the positive in everything, and this has come in handy during the lockdown. Everyone in my family knows that Wednesday is Zoom time and that I don’t want to be disturbed.

SELF needs your help!

In order to realize the online sessions every learner receives a R30 data voucher that enables equal participation in our one hour Zoom sessions. The money that we raised so far allowed us to sponsor a committed group of 15 learners for the past four months.

Our goal is to allow at least 15 more learners to join the platform. In order to sustain this group size until December 2020, we kindly ask for a small contribution towards the data costs.

We thank you for investing in the future of South Africa’s bright young learners. Instead of allowing the lockdown to become a traumatic experience with devastating academic and mental health consequences, let us turn it into a catalyst for positive change.

Best wishes,
Africa Unite School Club team
