Help Ian get Mobile

Donation protected
My name is Ian Robertson and up until approx 10 months ago I had full mobility until an unfortunate turn of fate has rendered me almost immobile and confined to a wheelchair. I am heavily involved in community radio and attending community events with a great team of volunteers, and I am also a support worker, but sadly I am unable to assist the team until I can become fully mobile.

It all started whilst on holiday in Greece where I cut my toe very badly on a sharp edge of a floor tile in the holiday apartment which made a deep gash on the toe. Medical treatment followed but by the time I arrived home the wound was not healing and was referred to hospital here in the UK.

Numerous forms of treatment for infection were not working the way I had hoped, doctors fought hard to save my foot. Following a few operations to the foot and leg, surgeons were unable to save the foot and was forced to amputate my leg below the knee.

Rehabilitation of course has been hampered severely by the coronavirus pandemic however some progress is being made and soon to be fitted with a prosthetic leg.

Meanwhile I have to rely on family and friends to take me anywhere, since where I live in the countryside, is several miles from any public transport. I feel a prisoner in my own home and would dearly love to be able to drive my car myself and lift the burden off my family.

The UK Government decided that if you become disabled, severely or not, after retirement age you cannot qualify for ANY benefits except Attendance allowance. They consider you are retired and not requiring transport for your work any longer hence no Mobility allowance. A shocking fact and in my view a disgrace that at retirement age if you become severely disabled that you simply don't count. I am 69 and held two jobs, Community Radio, unpaid, and a session support worker for St. Josephs Service, paid, helping others.

Unfortunately it was my right leg that was amputated and therefor I now require hand controls for my car which needs to be converted at a cost of over £2000.  This conversion is extremely costly and not one to bear lightly and this is why I require funding.

I am extremely grateful to my friends and volunteering colleagues in setting up this funding page to assist in achieving this goal I would appreciate any help you can give, to reach my target and provide the means to return to a full active life.

Thank you so much in advance.
