Camryn and Lane's Dance Film

Hi there! I’m Lane and I’m Camryn, we are LA-based Artists and Dancers fundraising for our upcoming dance film that we are currently in the process of creating. Though we're still developing its title, our film is about a community that we’ve lost literal touch with, a community that we’ve had to work together tirelessly to sustain: the dance community, worldwide.
Fortunately, Zoom has kept us alive as Artists, Dancers and Choreographers. It has brought us together from coast to coast in new ways than we’ve ever known as a modern community. However, what truly goes missing is the sweat, energy, passion, and the humanity that you can feel in a physical space. In this film, we aim to replicate that real-life energy and try to recall those experiences using only ourselves and our own images/reflections.
We are using a natural landscape of what once was a lake that is now dry as our stage and about 15 mirrors (broken and intact) to create a distinct set and scene that we find most fitting for this piece. It’s a film of illusionment, false connection, and hope of filling a void. But, to do this, we need your help!
Meet Lane:
Hi I’m Lane! I earned my BFA from the Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts in 2018. Since graduating I’ve been dancing and choreographing throughout Los Angeles. Currently, I am a company member of The Assembly Dance and SÍZa Dance Company. My most recent choreographic work ‘Shadow Series’ premiered at Brockus Project Studios in February 2020 as part of the Shift/West Residency Winter Cohort. I am fascinated by process and all that unfolds within one. I use my eye for shape and design to allow new unique landscapes and spaces for dance to form. As an artist I collect inspiration from many sources - two of which include photography and human interaction. 2020 has definitely put my craving for human interaction to the test and this film that Camryn and I are creating is an ode to all that encompasses that desire.
Meet Camryn:
Hi I’m Camryn. I graduated from Chapman University in 2018 with a BA in Dance and a self-designed minor in photography, journalism, documentary film and public relations. Since I picked up a camera in my high school photography class, the possibilities and intrigue around movement and camera have only sparked more and more creative juices in me. In college, I created a 10-minute short film called “Cue Ball” instead of an on-stage piece. I also created many other smaller scale projects with friends over the years, learning how to use film, editing and movement to tell a story.
I was introduced to Maya Deren’s work in college in my Visual Anthropology class and revisit her work on a regular basis. I also fell in love with choreographers Meredith Monk, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Pina Bausch’s dance films. A director I essentially idolize is Neels Castillion, who explores the relationship between artists and the picturesque landscapes and spaces of France.

What is different about this film, than any other film we’ve created before, is that we are making this more than just a DIY project. We brought a few other collaborators on board! We have our friend Daniel (based in Japan) on the project to compose and create our sound design for the film as well as our friend Seannie to be our DP. With our collaborators, we’re making something extremely particular to our vision and we are beyond excited as it has already been an extremely awakening process. We've spent a month rehearsing at our local park, in-studio (masks on), and on Zoom going back and forth with our team.
We're fundraising to help build out our set, piece together our wardrobe, fund our rehearsal space, and to pay our collaborators the rates they deserve. We aim to build the set that we see fit. It is necessary to rent studio space so that our movement can fully develop and evolve. We desire our costumes to emulate the colors and overall feel of the film.
The goal is to have this film resonate with any and all people who’ve felt their community slip away from them and act as a visual time-capsule. We plan to submit our finished product to dance and non-dance film festivals in hopes of gaining valuable feedback and sharing our message with many audiences. It goes without saying that as Artists our job is to create and uplift our community. With your help and support we can make this vision a reality!
