The Black Artists Burrough

My name is Akilah Ayanna and I am a performer on Broadway. I am urging producers and other powers-that-be in the industry along with non-Black people at large who are concerned with the liberation of Black people to invest in The Black Artists Burrough, a grassroots community-based organization for Black radical creatives and performers who need support, resources, and funding to produce their own creative work. This is a project that aims to revolutionize the way Black people interact with our industry. The founders have been stewing and working on this concept and its production on for a while, and the time is NOW for it to finally be brought into fruition. It is important now more than ever for Black artists to divest from racist, capitalistic institutions that are built on our backs and exploit our intellectual and creative labor for white consumption. Now is the time to build our own community and catalogs of work FOR US AND BY US to fulfill and indulge in our collective creativity. There is absolutely NO reason why we need to have a seat at ANY white table in order to feel sustained in our artistry and produce our brilliance on accessible platforms for our people.
