Last Chance Community Center Fire Loss

On August 16, 2020 a rare tropical lightning storm passed over the central coast region of California which resulted in multiple wildfires across the state. On the evening of August 18, 2020 the wildfires unexpectedly exploded into a firestorm that consumed much of the Santa Cruz Mountains and specifically the beautiful community of Last Chance. Of the over 100+ homes only a few remain and the community is planning ways to re-enter and live near their homeland safely/
The Last Chance community center hosted a schoolhouse, a barn (with a stage, kitchen, and seating), a garden, and a large field used for recreation and horses, and as an emergency evacuation area.
As described by Thomas Fuller from the New York Times this is a back-to-the-land community established in the early 1970s with a rich history of communing with nature.
The Last Chance community is an eccentric group of artists teachers, doctors, scientists, contractors and so much more. The community center site has been used for volleyball games, easter egg hunts, movie nights, and the wonderful annual barn dance - a fundraiser to pay for fire safety efforts and improvements to the community center for the benefit of all.
As the community grapples with the loss of our beloved garden, barn, kitchen, water system, and so much more we once again turn to the community center as a safe space to harbor us temporarily while we rebuild our homes and community. Your donation will support temporary shelters, a water system, a septic tank, a kitchen, and a bathhouse for fire victims. Getting the community center up and running will facilitate our community coming back- plus it doesn’t look like it qualifies for FEMA, making the gofundme all the more valuable.
Funds will also go towards making the road safe. This improvements are critical as the community rebuilds.
Handmade quilts decorate the barn in preparation for the annual barn dance.
The community center hosted many events including this easter egg hunt in 2000.
The mother tree stands tall as a beacon of hope and likely will continue to grow after the fires.
Many a community members went to school in this schoolhouse.
