East Orange BLM Mural

Black Lives Matter mural project at Manufacturers Village in East Orange, NJ.

We are a group of artists who have come together in a volunteer effort to create a community Black Lives Matter mural project at Manufacturers Village in East Orange, NJ.  We are excited about the opportunity to work in collaboration with Arts Council of East Orange.  To accomplish this, our artists group Manufacturers Village Artists , will work with Linda Street’s Pink Dragon Artist Syndicate .  We also have secured the support of Tracy Hubert and the Hubert family who are the owners of the historic industrial complex Manufacturer’s Village  in East Orange NJ.

The goal of this project is to provide a public art opportunity for younger and emerging artists from East Orange, that will also engage the EO community at large.  It was important to us that everyone from the community who will be actually working on the project be paid for their work. This not only includes the artists who will be painting the mural, but also the project manager and the videographer.  We have a projected budget of $24,700 to cover these expenses, in addition to all of the art supplies needed.

Liquitex has responded to our proposal by committing to donate ALL of the art supplies needed, AND an additional $15,000 toward the budget.  Thanks to this very generous donation from Liquitex, we will be able to move ahead with rolling out the project to the public as part of our October Open Studio event, with the goal of actually painting the mural in early spring of next year.  We will still need to raise an additional $10,000, and we hope that we will be able to do that ourselves.

The artists in the village are doing this entirely as a volunteer effort, and we hope that you will find this project as exciting as we do and will want to help make it happen.

BACKGROUND

Built in the 1880’s, the Victorian industrial architecture of the Manufacturers Village factory complex was the site of the original Johnson and Johnson Corporation, then known as Seabury and Johnson. It has since transformed into a diverse community of creative makers and small businesses, and is now a nexus for artists working in a variety of creative practices including filmmaking, photography, painting, sculpture, installation, and public art.   East Orange is a city of 70,000 with a population that is 88% African American, 5% Latino, and 7% other races.

Our proposal: The East Orange Community Mural Project

Our goal is to create a large and colorful outdoor mural on the surface of the parking lot at Manufacturer’s Village that would be designed and painted as a collaborative effort.  The design and execution of the mural would be a collaboration between the professional artists at Manufacturers Village, who will be working as volunteers, and emerging artists of East Orange who would be fully compensated for their work on the project.

In conjunction with the creation of the mural, a video documentary will be produced employing drone aerial cinematography to tell the story of this project.

This project is conceived as an economic development opportunity for the community; the artists, management, videographers, and vendors involved will all be from East Orange.

We would be grateful for any help towards this worthwhile project! Please consider donating! Thank you for your support! All donations will be processed through the Arts Council of East Orange and are fully TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

We’re excited to make this happen, and looking forward to your participation as we move ahead.
