Reyes Family Fire Relief Fund

Donation protected
The 3 Reyes families of Southern Oregon have lost everything during the destructive fires and need your love, support and donations.

On Tuesday the unthinkable happened.  Fire engulfed our Southern Oregon communities and devastated so many of our families.

In the blink of an eye the Reyes families' trailers were destroyed along with everything inside.

My friends and I reached out to help, and gathered what we could for immediate support.  We supplied bedding, clothing, some money and food.

Omar and his mother Esther Reyes lost everything except the family dog.  Their trailer was demolished and all their belongs destroyed.  They are currently living with relatives in cramped quarters and trying to comprehend their loss.   Omar came to the high school with his aunt today to collect things for his family and when I asked him how he was he said, “Fine, I do not like to cry, I need to keep strong for my mom.”   I was lucky enough to have taught Omar during elementary school and he is growing into a fine young man.

The 2nd Reyes family I don't know as well.  I know they have twins and they also lost their home to the fire.  I do know that they are living with brothers and sisters who are opening their small homes and welcoming them with open arms.

Marcela and Filemon Reyes are the 3rd Reyes family.  They have 3 children:
A sophomore at Ashland High School
a 4 year old son
a one month old baby boy
Fily, the father of the one month old baby, with tears in his eyes said, “I just don’t know how to thank everyone.”   As he put the donated items in his car (thankfully the family had one car that had survived the fire) Zuna presented him with a toy suitable for his 4 year old son.  Again overcome with emotion he said, “my son has been asking me for a toy to play with, now I have one to give him.”

The Reyes families and their relatives who are supporting them are and have been mainly Walker families for many, many years.  I am a teacher at Walker School in Ashland, Oregon and I have had the honor of teaching many of their children.

By witnessing their grief and trauma I realized that recovery means much more than just this weeks donations.  For these 3 families to truly recover I ask for your generous donations that will provide these 3 wonderful families an opportunity to rebuild and not just survive today and tomorrow, but recover from this devastating tragedy.

With deep appreciation and love for any donation you can give.
