Fire Relief for Jannie- Beloved Grandma & Artist

Jannie Ledard, age 82, our dear mother and grandmother, lost her home and all her belongings in the Almeda fire that tore through Talent, OR September 8th, 2020, destroying hundreds of homes including the entire Oak Valley 55+ community where she lived.

The fires came with almost no warning. Thankfully, Jannie was able to escape safely with a bag of her important documents and the clothes on her back. Everything else, from her glass-works studio to decades of keepsakes, family heirlooms, and photos is lost.

We are raising funds to help her secure a place to stay and gather the resources she needs to stay safe and healthy during this immediate transition as she searches for a more permanent place to live and rebuild her life. Truly anything helps!

As anyone who is lucky enough to meet her knows, Jannie is incredibly compassionate, humble and generous, with a heart of absolute gold and she needs our support now more than ever!

Her story, along with pictures of what’s left of her home and more stories and details of the fire, was published in the Oregonian here:

Her 23 yr old granddaughter, Eavy Barbieux, also lost everything in the fire, from her accordion and journals to her surfboard that she shaped at 11-years old. She had recently relocated to Oregon and was storing all she owned at her grandmothers as she looked for a place to live.

Jannie: Grandmother, Community Member & Artist
Jannie is an artist, musician and a vibrant and joyful member of her community. She is also a mother of two and a grandmother of three. Her home was a sanctuary and space of celebration for her small but tightly knit family.

After 10 years she felt truly at home in her Talent community and last year, she helped to create the mosaic by the public library in Talent. https://mailtribune.com/news/top-stories/gallery/a-hive-of-artist-efforts-behind-new-bee-city-mural-in-talent

She spent hours on end in her small home-studio, creating beautiful fused-glass jewelry, mosaics and stained glass pieces to share as gifts. She lost her kiln, tools, and entire collection of jewelry pieces and glass projects. The bright colors of the glass that lined the walls of her studio, front yard and home stood out in the ashes, and the mosaic waterfall in the front yard was the only thing left intact.

Jannie looked forward to her daily ritual of playing piano, which brought her peace and contentment. She’s lost her piano and collection of sheet music.

When she wasn’t creating indoors, Jannie found refuge in her humble garden. She was in the process of making it drought-resistant, filling it with succulents and her mosaics, speckling the hillside with color.
