COVID 19 Nurse Bankrupted by Emergency Surgery

Donation protected
Our mother, Sheila, retired from nursing in 2017 after surviving lung cancer. She took the time to recover and enjoy time with her seven grandchildren. She has just returned to work on the front lines of the pandemic at age sixty-one.

Our father, a Vietnam veteran, was laid off from AT&T in May. Along with 3,200 other employees due to COVID-19. For fear of losing their home, Sheila immediately took a job as a surgical center nurse. Four weeks into her new job, her gallbladder became infected and required emergency surgery. She was not yet eligible for employer-provided insurance nor eligible for ACA or Medicare due to being newly employed. The surgery and 27-hour stay in the hospital resulted in a $74,000 bill due in only 30 months. If paid in full within 30 days, a discount of 25% will be applied.

Sheila is currently back at work, days after her surgery. Her salary will not support them, in addition to paying off this unforeseen hospital debt. Our father, who just turned sixty-five, is desperately searching for work in a COVID 19 job market.
Sheila is a warrior that never complains and helps us all hold everything together. We worry every second she’s at work exposed to COVID-19 as she is considered extra vulnerable due to her cancer history.

Our parents have always provided for their children and grandchildren. Even in hard times, they have always supported us. They are generous and kind to their neighbors. They take pride in always being able to help others. This financial uncertainty is breaking their hearts. They have never been the ones to ask for help, always taking on the burden alone.
This financial stress is overwhelming for my parents. They are scared about their future. They will be losing their home if they cannot find a way to make the monthly medical payments of $2,467.

In these extraordinarily hard times for everyone, we appreciate you taking the time to read our story! We cannot express our gratitude enough for your help and generosity.
