It is so difficult to tell this story. I ache with the thoughts of all the suffering that Malou and Hernan, and the whole Vasquez Family, is dealing with right now.
Several weeks ago, Hernan’s father, Herminio, became suddenly, acutely, ill. After a valiant two week fight in the hospital, he succumbed to complications of diabetes. He was the beloved husband to Pen, his adored wife, for over 50 years and a father, whose children meant the world to him. All but Hernan, lived in the Philippines. Herminio loved people and, for the last decade, he cared for residents in a memory care home. The family’s grief was compounded by the inability to be at Herminio’s bedside due to hospital's COVID-infection-prevention guidelines.
As Malou and Hernan were lovingly planning Herminio’s funeral, they suffered a parents’ greatest loss. Their only child, beautiful Gabby, the miracle, the love and light of their lives—took her own life in their family home. Her unimaginable, unforeseen death has brought an avalanche of pain to Malou and Hernan and has shattered their hearts.
Now, Malou and Hernan, in their deepest grief, are faced with mounting funeral and burial costs for both Herminio and Gabby. No one could possibly prepare for anything like this.
