Galway Bay Sailing Club Facilities Development

Donation protected
Galway Bay Sailing Club is seeking your support to raise funds for our plan to develop training rooms and a boat storage facility on the grounds of the club.

Background

Galway Bay Sailing Club is a volunteer run sailing and training centre based in Renville on the inner end of Galway Bay near Oranmore, Co. Galway. We aim to promote sailing in the County Galway area, and we work with other groups to promote maritime awareness and water safety in the community.

The club has been active since 1970 and has developed over the years with the support of the local community, business and local and government authorities. We have a clubhouse overlooking Renville Bay, with male and female changing rooms and shower facilities downstairs.

What we do

We run weekly organised racing for cruiser yachts and dinghies at adult level, while we run junior sailing for younger members as well as summer camps open to children from the general community. We have an active Sailability group that organises weekly sailing for the disabled in specially adapted boats throughout the season. We also host competitive regatta events at regional and national level, as well as social and leisure events throughout the year. We are Sailing Ireland accredited (national oversight body) and run training courses from beginner to advanced level.

We welcome new members from beginner to experienced level nomatter what age or gender. Our fleets of cruisers and dinghys are frequently willing to take on new crew, and joining as a member offers the chance to get sailing on boats in the fleet, pick up on-the-water experience and get involved in our local boating community.

Our Plan

We plan to develop purpose-built training rooms within our existing clubhouse, and develop a boat storage facility to relocate the storage of our safety boats. The training rooms will also provide an ideal event management space for our regatta events. We are currently limited to running our classroom based activity in a small meeting room or the bar area, and we see the training rooms as essential to having a modern day learning facility at the club for the many and increasing training courses taking place all year round.

We have applied for grant funding from the Department of Sport’s Sports Capital grant programme which we expect to receive response from later in 2021. We will be required to contribute a significant amount of the funding from club funds, and so we appeal for your help. In the event we are successful with this grant funding we plan to begin construction at the end of 2021. If not successful we will explore other funding options and project alterations. Either way we see this project as the logical progression for the club's development and growth into the future.

Your Contribution

The club is appealing to members, past members, local people, the business and tourism community, as well as all those with any interest in seafaring activity to contribute where possible.

We don’t want anyone in any way to feel obliged to contribute. We recognise and understand that COVID-19 is having a devastating impact on many and as a result their own personal circumstances may already be very difficult.

All funds raised will be published in the club accounts and available to members on request or at the club AGM.
