Nova Scotia Relocation

Once upon a time a disabled kid had a dream. Disabled kids grow up and the world is hard for disabled adults. I'm really good at living in the margins and making do, but as Voyageur once told me, survival is inadequate. We are effectively a single income family living in southern Ontario. While my husband has work, it doesn't seem like any paycheque is big enough in this area. Housing is expensive with low vacancy rates and we have both been renting for years before we even met.

I have always dreamed of moving to rural Nova Scotia where the cost of living allows for a much more comfortable life. I know the Halifax has its own housing crisis that mirrors ours here, but we do have an opportunity to be outside of there. Shawn has a job that can allow him to transfer in summer 2021. We want to be ready.

We're just queers with a dream. Living where we are our budget is stretched thin. We have no resources to support the community in ways we dream of. The plan as it stands is to have a farm in Nova Scotia, eventually through programming within the province we want to become productive farmers. Shawn will continue to work, we mean to support ourselves. This fundraiser is so we can get there. There will be moving costs, we will need to do inspections, legal fees, land transfer taxes, down payment. The amount we're likely to need could top 40k. We will be saving alongside with you, what we can while we're here.

We aim to help with food insecurity in our community. We plan to pilot more holistic and humane livestock production. We want a place where people can come and observe and feel safe. Eventually we would love to be able to provide a place for people to stay so they can move out of where they can't afford and start over.

Life seems to be full of starting-overs, and we've had more than our share. This is a starting over we want to make into something beautiful and sustainable.
There's a property we're watching  and we hope it stays for sale. We'd love to put all your names on the barn so we can remember how we came to be where we are. We are launching a website/blog and other social media, tracking our progress from life in Ontario, buying a house in another province during a pandemic, and starting a farm in your 30s.

We're kinda special and amusing. I'm queer nonbinary and autistic with a bunch of comorbidity that makes working life impossible, but I've always been great with animals. Shawn is in his 30s, queer and more neurotypical but with his own mental health challenges. We're doing a big thing, with hope and joy in a world that keeps trying to make us feel hopeless. Everything here will be saved towards launching to Nova Scotia next year, after that feel free to join our social media and watch us take on the world.
