YAKAR PROJECT

YAKAR

The Yakar project is designed to improve the daily lives of the children of ADE, a school located in Thiaroye, an underprivileged suburb of Dakar, by helping them develop an activity that is vital to them: football.

Our first mission was to distribute 500 jerseys to them last November.

In order to give the project the necessary scope, all the members of Yakar have made a documentary on the lives of these children and their relationship to sport, which is so special.

We need your financial support to help the school get through this period of covid.
This money will be used to buy school supplies and sport materials for the ADE kids.

In 2015, Jonathan Szwarc  went on a humanitarian mission to ADE School (Avenir et Développement de l’Enfant, “Children’s Future and Development” in English). The impact football has on the day-to-day lives of the children, and of this community school, founded by its headmaster Djibril Sané in 2004, really touched him, and planted the seed of an idea.

Five years later, the Yakar project was born. Yakar means “hope” in Wolof, which is one of Senegal’s national languages. The goal of the project is to help Senegalese youth through the medium of sport.

It took 18 months of work for the Yakar project to be born. Many talented people from many fields brought their knowledge together, in order to give life to the project, all the way from Paris:

MidiQuinze , a graphic design agency, who created the shirts
Tom Weber and Nelson Coulhon , who oversaw photography and videography in Dakar
Karl Hab and Bishop Nast, who oversaw photography in Paris
Nike, who supplied the 500 shirts

In November 2020, a few days after the children returned after going without school for nine months, due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, Jonathan, Tom and Nelson were able to return to the school, to hand out shirts and document the project.

The documentary is set to be released on the 15th of February 2021 on Youtube and IGTV. The 20-minute-long film reiterates the way the children, their parents and their teachers made football a vital part of their daily lives.

Yakar’s first mission was a material one: get the 500 shirts to the pupils of ADE. Because the Yakar shirt was designed to be worn by the children of ADE, but also for anyone else who wants to buy one, multiple photoshoots took place both in Paris and Dakar, with multiple photographers with different styles. The goal of this was to show the beauty of the shirt from many different angles.

150 shirts will be put up for sale online, at Pro Direct Soccer. A fundraiser has also just been launched. The goal of these two endeavors is to fund a second mission for the Yakar project:  To build a football field in the next few months, specially adapted to the children of ADE School.
