Raising awareness for stem cell donation

We came close to leukemia in the past two years due to the illness of a member of our family. Getting to know more about this disease we got surprised on how blood stem cell transplantation works: in no other case more than this it is true that every single one of us can make a difference. Just think that finding a donor suitable for an ill person is as difficult as finding a specific grain in two kilos of rice (yes, this is where our name, Rice4Change, comes from!). 

Reflecting on the gift of our healthiness, we started to wonder how we could use this to help those who can’t rely on it: that’s when we decided that we would take on as non-professional the 70.3 Ironman in Staffordshire . We will tackle 1.8 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21 km running (…damn us! ) . 

Our aim is to raise awareness about blood cancer and stem cell donation, spreading the idea of how easy, impacting and harmless is to sign up in the donors’ list. Moreover, we plan to collect fundings to be donated to three different charities devoted to this goals: Anthony Nolan , operating in the United Kingdom, ADMO  and Paolo Belli , operating in Italy and playing a invaluable role in our own story.

Facciamo luce sulla donazione di midollo osseo

 

Due anni fa ci siamo scontrati con la leucemia dopo che un membro della nostra famiglia si è ammalato. Informandoci un po’ di più su questa malattia, che conoscevamo poco e solo di nome, siamo rimasti molto sorpresi di come funzioni il trapianto di midollo. Ci è parso uno di quei casi in cui davvero ognuno di noi può fare la differenza. Se si pensa che per ogni persona malata trovare un donatore compatibile è complicato quanto trovare uno specifico chicco di riso in un sacco da due chili si comprende quanto ogni singolo/a donatore/rice possa fare un’enorme differenza nella cura (sì, da qui il nostro nome!).

 

Improvvisamente consapevoli di ciò che abbiamo sempre dato per scontato - la fortuna di vivere con un corpo sano - abbiamo cercato un modo per sfruttare questo dono e aiutare le persone malate. Abbiamo deciso di prendere parte da non professionisti all’Ironman  70.3 in Staffordshire (Regno Unito). Ci cimenteremo con 1.8 chilometri di nuoto, 90 chilometri di bicicletta e 21 chilometri di corsa (…accidenti a noi! ).

 

Il nostro obiettivo è aumentare la consapevolezza pubblica sulla leucemia, la donazione di midollo oseo e spiegare quanto facile e impattante sia iscriversi alla lista dei donatori e assolutamente non doloroso il trapianto! Ancora, vogliamo raccogliere una cifra da donare a tre associazioni impegnate nella stessa causa: Anthony Nolan , attiva nel Regno Unito, ADMO e Paolo Belli , operative in Italia e direttamente collegate alla nostra storia.
