Hola, me llamo Yudith y soy la madre de Santiago, un niño de 7 años de edad, somos de Venezuela y actualmente estamos en España.

Santiago fue diagnosticado con un Glioma Difuso Intrínseco de la Protuberancia del Tronco Encefálico (DIPG), es un tumor incurable y devastador.

Las terapias que se han utilizado en los últimos 30 años para el DIPG han fracasado completamente, más del 90% de los pacientes fallecen en los dos años posteriores al diagnóstico, Santiago fue diagnosticado en Octubre del 2021, eso quiere decir que va a cumplir un año de haber sido diagnosticado.

Las radioterapias frenan el avance de la enfermedad por unos pocos meses, hoy en día lo han radiado en tres diferentes oportunidades, en Noviembre del 2021 recibió 30 sesiones en Venezuela, las cuales no surgieron ningún efecto, fue entonces cuando decidimos viajar a España en busca de otra opinión médica, lo llevamos al Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, donde desafortunadamente nos dijeron que no existe un tratamiento curativo para este tumor.

Comenzó a presentar nuevos síntomas y lo radian por segunda vez, en Junio de este año, esa vez fueron 12 sesiones de radioterapia. Para ver los resultados de esa radiación le hacen los estudios pertinentes finalizando el mes de Agosto, pero los resultados cada vez van a peor, pudieron observar que tiene dos Nodulos en la columna y es cuando deciden radiarlo por tercera vez, siendo estás 5 sesiones con la misma función de frenar el avance porque en la zona donde están ubicados estos nodulos, de crecer un poco más, quedaría parapléjico.

Cabe mencionar que también está ingresado en Cuidados Paliativos del Hospital Universitario Infantil Niño Jesús.

Por medio de la asociación #unidoscontraeldipg nos pusimos en contacto con un Doctor de Alemania, su nombre es Arnhold Jurgen Karl, este doctor nos habló de un Ensayo Clínico para el tumor que tiene mi hijo, dejándonos claro que no es la cura, que es un ensayo y que no promete más de 3 a 4 años de vida, que con este tratamiento busca ganar tiempo para que la ciencia siga avanzando.

Para nosotros es una oportunidad, que Santiago pueda vivir unos años más, y como bien dice el Doctor Alemán, ganar tiempo, con mucha Fe en Dios que puedan dar con la cura para este tipo de tumor y podamos salvar la vida de mi hijo y la de todos esos pacientes con este diagnóstico.

Este ensayo clínico tiene un costo de 2.120,00€ mensual.

Hello, my name is Yudith and I am the mother of Santiago, a 7-year-old boy. We are from Venezuela and we are currently in Spain.

Santiago was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma of the Brainstem Protuberance (DIPG), it is an incurable and devastating tumor.

The therapies that have been used in the last 30 years for DIPG have completely failed, more than 90% of patients die within two years of diagnosis. Santiago was diagnosed in October 2021, that means that he will fulfill a year of being diagnosed.

Radiotherapies slow down the progression of the disease for a few months. Santiago has been radiated three different times so far. He received 30 sessions in Venezuela in November 2021 (thanks to fundraising made last year); however, this had no effect, that's when we decided to travel to Spain looking for another medical opinion. He is currently been seeing at the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, where unfortunately, they told us that there is no curative treatment for this tumor.

He began to present new symptoms this summer and they radiated him for the second time (June 2022). To see the results of this radiation, they carry out the relevant studies ending in August 2022, but the results are getting worse and worse, they were able to observe that he has two Nodules in his spine and that is when they decide to radiate him for the third time, being 5 sessions with the same function of slowing down the progress because in the area where these nodules are located, if it grew a little more, it would be paraplegic.

It is worth mentioning that he is also admitted to Palliative Care at the Niño Jesús Children's University Hospital.

Through the association #unidoscontraeldipg we got in touch with a Doctor from Germany, his name is Arnhold Jurgen Karl, this doctor told us about a Clinical Trial for the tumor that my son has, making it clear that it is not the cure, that it is a test and that does not promise more than 3 to 4 years of life. We are aiming to gain time with this treatment, hoping that the science continues to advance, and the cure can be found.

For us, it will be a blessing if Santiago can live a few more years, and as the German Doctor rightly says, buy time, with a lot of faith in God that they can find the cure for this type of tumor, and we can save the life of my son and that of all those patients with this diagnosis.

This clinical trial has a cost of €2,120.00 per month which is not covered by the Spanish Healthcare and I am not currently working because I need to look after Santiago.

We have no idea how many months of treatment he will need but we would like to secure at least 5 months more so really see an impact.
