Send Broccoli to India to Coach Ultimate Frisbee

Donation protected
Hi! I'm Sam, nickname Broccoli, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm an avid ultimate frisbee player and coach. This GoFundMe is to raise funds to send me to India in support of Playquity, an NGO that seeks to empower girls and women through sport (in this case, ultimate frisbee). I hope you'll read on to find out more about their methods and why this is so important to me.

What is Playquity?
The Playquity model consists of first training young women in the sport of ultimate frisbee without the presence of boys, imparting "not only athletic skills but also confidence, empathy, communication and interpersonal skills that are critical to their development." Once the girls know the sport well, they then choose male teammates and pass on what they have learned, forming a truly equitable coed team. It's an important role reversal in which boys experience female leadership for maybe the first time, and girls "possess skills and knowledge about something that their male counterparts do not." (In a word - AMAZING!)

Frisbee and Me
I started playing ultimate frisbee when I was 18 years old, and I can personally attest to the positive influences it can have on a young woman's life. Playing, captaining, and coaching has given me self-confidence, taught me countless interpersonal skills, and shown me the power and joy of being part of a group of women athletes. Playquity's mission resonates so strongly with me because I have personally experienced the good that ultimate frisbee can do, and when I learned that I could help provide that opportunity to girls living in a largely patriarchal society, I immediately wanted in.

The Collaboration
My role with Playquity in 2023 will be to help lead their Coaches Academy. Since one of the core concepts is the promotion of female leadership, all the coaches within the Playquity system are women (!). In order to support these coaches, Playquity is hosting an 8 week academy that will focus on enhancing their frisbee knowledge and leadership capabilities, therefore outfitting them to be role models in their communities and their respective frisbee teams. I'm honored and excited to meet these women and help foster their skills on and off the field!

Where the Money Goes
This is where you come in! (Kudos to you for reading this far, btw). Playquity has generously offered to cover my lodging and transportation while in India, but for me to make this project work, I need a bit more funding. I've broken down the expenses as follows:

  • Roundtrip flight Valencia - India: 1,200€
  • My Valencia rent while away: 600€
  • Medical Travel Insurance: 200€
  • Visa fees: 200€
  • Ship gifted discs from Spain: 50€
  • Living Expenses in India: 500€

So whether you're a supporter of ultimate frisbee, gender equity, ending poverty in India , or just of yours truly, I hope you'll consider making a contribution and spreading the word about Playquity!
