LET'S BUILD NIEUW AURORA A NEW PRESCHOOL!

Help us build a new preschool in Nieuw Aurora, Suriname!

The current preschool building of the Johannes Arabi School in this remote village in the heart of Suriname is a wooden shack. The building is dusty and difficult to keep clean, often leading to children becoming ill. Dilapidated wooden planks function as walls, allowing the kids to wander off. Preschool teacher Shirley explained to us how challenging it is to teach in this environment. A new and improved preschool building with all necessary facilities will provide a clean, safe and inspiring learning environment for Nieuw Aurora's youngest students!

This project was born during our six-week visit to Nieuw-Aurora in September-October 2023. Rachel, Charlotte, Ronja and I (Niamh), four students from Utrecht University in The Netherlands, were warmly welcomed in the village to conduct a socio-ecological research project. During our work, we fell in love with Nieuw Aurora and its inhabitants and became determined to give back in a meaningful way. Building a new preschool will do just that, by helping the youngest Nieuw Aurorans start their education. We are in direct contact with the school as well as traditional authorities in the village to make this project a reality. Knowledgeable community members provided the technical drawing and budget, and local engineers and builders will carry out the construction. The goal of 21,000 euros will allow us to build a clean, sustainable double-classroom building with bathroom amenities where generations of preschoolers can learn and play.
