Salviamo il Cantiere Rodolico!

siamo Giuseppe e Alice. Ci conosciamo appena, ma abbiamo in comune un sogno di bellezza: difendere la sopravvivenza di un luogo raro, patrimonio di tutti noi, ma che rischia di scomparire per sempre. Questo luogo magico è il Cantiere Navale Rodolico di Acitrezza.

IL CANTIERE

Non lontano da Catania, si trova un piccolo borgo di mare, Acitrezza. Qui, da cinque generazioni, ancora oggi, una famiglia di maestri d’ascia progetta, costruisce e ripara le imbarcazioni dedicate alla navigazione e alla pesca nel Mediterraneo. Sono i Rodolico, uomini dal volto fiero e dai tratti indimenticabili, custodi di un sapere antico che si tramanda inalterato da millenni - l’arte della costruzione delle barche - incarnazione di un genius loci che risuona ancora forte nella comunità locale (N.d.A Maestro d'Ascia).

Grazie alla quotidiana e operosa presenza dei maestri d’ascia nel porticciolo di Acitrezza, ancora oggi alcune variopinte imbarcazioni di legno, le varche trezzote, (N.d.A, Alice dipinge un gozzo al Cantiere Rodolico), dondolano lungo il molo, assediate ma non vinte dal biancore accecante della plastica di motoscafi e gommoni. Poesia pura.

Visitare il Cantiere dei maestri d’ascia è un viaggio nella cultura, nella storia, nel costume, nell'arte, nell'animo umano: il maestro d’ascia Salvatore Rodolico, classe 1937 e un luccichìo geniale negli occhi, dal 2018 figura nel Libro dei Tesori Umani Viventi del REIS Sicilia. La sua persona lascia il segno nel ricordo di visitatori, turisti e passanti.

Insieme ai figli Sebastiano e Giovanni, anche loro maestri d’ascia, Turi Rodolico ama raccontare la storia di famiglia, che si snoda attraverso i secoli: dalla prima fattura rilasciata dal Cantiere nel 1808 alla barca commissionata un secolo dopo dall’Università di Catania per il trasporto di passeggeri verso l’isola Lachea, fino alla sua giovinezza negli anni ‘60. È questo il momento in cui la passione e l’ingegno lo portano a progettare qualcosa di nuovo: dal sistema remo-velico delle tradizionali imbarcazioni da pesca si passa alla rivoluzione del motore entrobordo, che permette di costruire pescherecci di qualsiasi stazza. Sono gli anni d’oro del cantiere. A quei tempi il borgo di Acitrezza e il Cantiere Rodolico erano un tutt’uno. Attorno alla faticosa attività dei maestri d’ascia ruotavano le speranze e il sostentamento di tante famiglie.

A partire dagli anni ’90, la mole di lavoro di un tempo subisce un calo, dovuto sia al blocco delle licenze per la costruzione di nuovi pescherecci sia alla competizione con i nuovi materiali.

Ma è nel 2016 che accade qualcosa di intollerabile: il Cantiere viene violentemente attaccato dalla prepotenza di una politica cieca e sprezzante del suo valore storico e sociale di patrimonio collettivo. I Rodolico sono così costretti a indebitarsi con le banche per ottemperare a una serie di collaudi e investimenti rivelatisi inutili, finché la loro attività lavorativa viene stroncata da una multa a dir poco discutibile di 20.000 euro.

L’ottantenne Turi Rodolico minaccia in una lettera aperta al Comune di incatenarsi in piazza. Una vicenda surreale che vede i maestri d’ascia balzare agli onori della cronaca - complice un contesto eccezionale e quei volti senza tempo - e una intera comunità schierarsi in loro difesa, capofila l’Associazione Centro Studi Acitrezza. Il Cantiere resiste, incastonato tra lo specchio di mare della Riviera dei Ciclopi e il frenetico viavai del lungomare. Sta in mezzo tra passato e presente, fragile e prezioso tassello dell’identità di un territorio.

Da qualche anno, grazie anche al sostegno di aficionados, alcune guide turistiche e di importanti circuiti di promozione del territorio come il FAI e Le Vie dei Tesori, la famiglia Rodolico ha aperto le porte del suo Cantiere a tanti bambini in gita scolastica, curiosi alla ricerca di tesori nascosti, artisti, intellettuali, turisti da tutto il mondo, accogliendo con gratitudine e orgoglio la possibilità di dare voce alla storia di famiglia.

Oggi più che mai, il Cantiere Rodolico non si arrende, anzi rilancia aprendosi alla dimensione sociale: come storico luogo di lavoro depositario di un sapere millenario e come associazione culturale, desiderosa di fare rete e attivare nuove energie.

La sua qualificante presenza nell’area portuale di Acitrezza, inoltre, si innesta in una questione più ampia e di grande attualità che riguarda il recupero e la tutela del rapporto con il mare, segnando una inversione di tendenza rispetto alla progressiva distanza - fisica e mentale - che sempre più separa le persone da questo elemento di vita.

PERCHE' UN CROWDFUNDING PER IL CANTIERE?

Il Cantiere Navale Rodolico è Bene Comune e Patrimonio Collettivo. Non vogliamo che di esso rimanga solo una targa commemorativa. Non vogliamo che un sapere custodito da generazioni scompaia come il sole dietro all'orizzonte. Se, come crediamo, la tradizione altro non è che sempre un nuovo cominciamento, desideriamo essere i sostenitori di questa rigenerazione e aiutare il Cantiere Rodolico a rinnovare la sua missione di bellezza, inserendosi nuovamente nel tempo presente e proiettandosi nel futuro. Come una volta, quando l’intera comunità si riuniva per partecipare ed emozionarsi al varo di una barca.

Così, servono fondi per accompagnare il Cantiere in questo meraviglioso progetto di rinascita, dotarlo delle caratteristiche strutturali e funzionali necessarie affinché esso venga percepito non come un “recinto” ma come un invito a condividere tempi e spazi, custode di un sapere aperto alle contaminazioni. Patrimonio della comunità, volano di emozioni.

We are Giuseppe and Alice. We barely know each other, but we share a dream of beauty: to defend the survival of a rare place, which represents heritage for us. Nonetheless, it risks disappearing forever because the local administrators are deaf to the call of our roots. This magical place is the Rodolico Shipyard in Acitrezza, Catania.

At Acitrezza, a family of shipwrights has been designing, building and repairing boats for navigation and fishing in the Mediterranean for five generations. They are the Rodolico family, men with proud faces and unique somatic features, custodians of an ancient knowledge that has been handed down unchanged for millennia - the art of boat building and carpentry - the embodiment of a genius loci that still resonates strongly in the local community.

Thanks to the daily, hard-working presence of the shipwrights in the small port of Acitrezza, even today some multi-coloured wooden boats, the varche trezzote (ed. boats from Acitrezza), swing along the quay, besieged but not defeated by the blinding whiteness of the plastic of motorboats and dinghies. Pure poetry.

Visiting the shipyard is a dive into culture, history, traditions, art, and the human souls: the shipwright, Salvatore Rodolico, born in 1937, with his bright shining eyes, has been listed in "Il Libro Dei Tesori Umani Viventi" by REIS Sicilia since 2018. His person leaves a mark in the memory of visitors, tourists and passers-by. Together with his sons Sebastiano and Giovanni, who are also shipwrights, Turi Rodolico adores telling the family story, which spans five generations: from the first invoice issued by the shipyard in 1808 to the boat commissioned a century later by the University of Catania to transport passengers to the Lachea island, up to his youth in the 1960s, when his passion and brilliance led him to trigger an epochal transition from the oar-sail system of traditional fishing to the inboard engine boats. These were the shipyard's golden years. In those days, the village of Acitrezza and the Rodolico shipyard overlapped. Around the strenuous activity of the shipwrights revolved the hopes and livelihood of many families.

Starting in the 1990s, the shipyard experienced a decrease in the amount of work due to the authorities stopping releasing the permits for the construction of new vessels, as well as due to the competition with new materials, namely glass-resin boats.

From 2016 on, the Shipyard has been targeted by local authorities, whose actions and policies have clearly resulted in not taking into consideration the enormous historical and social value of this place of heritage. Simultaneously, such indifference led to economic turmoil: Rodolico's family was forced to incur debt with several banks to afford investments in order to regularize the shipyard and the machinery - those investments turn out to be needless. Furthermore, they incurred a fine of 20,000 euros. In the letter to the local authorities written personally by him, Salvatore Rodolico threatens them to chain himself in the square in front of the town hall. The whole community of Acitrezza, led by the Centro Studi Acitrezza association, went off in defence of the shipwrights. Rodolico's shipyard still resists. Suspended between past, present and an unknown future, a precious, but fragile piece of a territory's identity.

In the last few years, thanks also to the support of aficionados, several tourist guides and important touristic circuits, promoting the area, such as the FAI and Le Vie Dei Tesori, the Rodolico family has opened the doors of its Cantiere to many children on school trips, curious people in search of hidden treasures, artists, intellectuals and tourists from all over the world that have the unique opportunity to meet the iconic shipwrights and hear the history of the family.

Now more than ever, the Cantiere Rodolico does not want to surrender. Rather, he wants to open up itself to the social dimension as a historical workplace, repository of age-old knowledge, as well as a cultural association, eager to network and collaborate with several social actors.

In addition, its presence in the Acitrezza port area can make again any debates about the recovery of the pristine relationship between men and the sea, as well as subverting the progressive separation between people and this element of life, very current topics.

CROWDFUNDING IS WHAT IT TAKES!

We consider Rodolico’s shipyard a place of heritage. We think that celebrating the importance of that place through commemorative plaques and awards is not enough. And we won’t let this place and his know-how, which has been preserved for generations, disappear forever. We want to support with all our strengths this place and its battle for survival. We want to pursue this worthy objective through a crowdfunding campaign. Involving people again, as was in the past, when the whole community of Acitrezza used to gather up around the shipyard to join the process of building up and lunch a new boat.

So, funds are needed to accompany the Shipyard in this marvellous rebirth project, to equip it with the structural and functional characteristics necessary for it to be perceived not as a "fence" but as a contamination-oriented place to experience a new concept of time and space and share moments with those long-standing guardians of knowledge. Let’s contribute to the revival of this place of heritage!
