The Marotz Family Fundraiser

On September 20th Ty & Liz Marotz welcomed their third child, a son, George Timothy Marotz. Born at 34 weeks, George headed straight for the NICU at the suburban Chicago Hospital where he was born to be secured and stabilized in a series of standard premature newborn checks and procedures. It quickly became apparent to his doctors that George was experiencing a very serious health issue with his lack of ability to control and stabilize his blood sugar levels on his own. Doctors immediately jumped into action to supply George with the necessary IV support to reach healthy blood sugar levels, assist his breathing challenges and monitor the stresses placed therein upon his heart.

 

Battling since birth to help him get his numbers within the normal range, after a week of little to no success, doctors made the decision to transfer George and family to an Lurie's Children's Hospital downtown Chicago for additional expertise and resources for continued support. Unfortunately, the additional teams brought in to help little George at the Lurie's haven't been able to reach the desired blood sugar and breathing goals and after two more weeks of NICU care with his persistent health issues, Doctors informed the Marotz family that their now 3 week old newborn baby George was in a very serious battle that would require the next level of doctoral specialists and care to help him with his continued blood sugar and breathing challenges as well as close monitoring over the heart-stressing medications.

 

Doctors informed the Marotz family that George would need a special Endocrine team with special scanning equipment to analyze exactly what is going on. With only 3 of the scanners in the country, Lurie's Children's Hospital is currently in the process of transferring little George via air-ambulance to a Children's Hospital of Philadelphia that has extensive expertise, equipment, and resources on hand.

 

George has been officially diagnosed with Congenital Hyperinsulinism - an issue that effects 1 out of 50,000 newborns in which the pancreas is over-producing insulin and effectively eliminating blood sugar in his system. George will receive the necessary scan to determine the next course of action but doctors have indicated there is a very high chance that little George will need to undergo a life-saving surgery to remove part or all of his pancreas. It is expected that George will remain in the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for a minimum of 4-6 weeks while he undergoes treatment, monitoring and (hopefully a full and complete) recovery.
